Groundwork

Responsibilities

  • Review the project background, NLHF development stage documentation, architectural proposals, Business Plan, RIBA 3 Interpretation Framework and Design Plan, NLHF Activity Plan and NLHF Evaluation Framework.
  • Work with the client to review the existing RIBA stage 3 Interpretation Design Plan in light of any feedback from the NLHF.
  • Finalise the interpretation design at RIBA stage 4 whilst remaining consistent with the interpretation framework (i.e. aims, objectives, themes and topics), undertaking all detailed design development for client approval and tendering.
  • Competitively tender the fabrication, fit‑out and hardware for the scheme, providing the client with a transparent cost and tender report (and a statement of profit for any in‑house fabrication elements).
  • Appoint agreed sub‑contractors and manage them to completion – including on‑site supervision of installation works.
  • Work with the project team to creatively engage communities and audiences through co‑creation activities delivered in partnership with the NLHF Activity Plan.
  • Appoint staff to work with volunteers and local schools on research and capturing of oral histories.
  • Work with the client team to agree the tone of voice and style for the content.
  • Create the required interpretation copy from information provided through to final scripts.
  • Develop a graphics design package based on the brand and identity details we will provide.
  • Undertake graphic art working, software and content production as needed.
  • Work with the architectural design team and main contractor to ensure ongoing integration across the project.
  • Manage the fit‑out contractor(s) and any other specialist suppliers by art‑directing, content supervising, piloting and testing, monitoring, quality checking, producing, installing and snagging all exhibition and interpretation design elements to completion.
  • Provide the appropriate levels of insurance cover and aftercare guidance.
  • Review existing plans and documents and become familiar with the building, the aims and objectives of the project and the client team.
  • Attend regular on‑line meetings and monthly site visits with the client, architect and wider design and project teams as appropriate.
  • Provide timely information to the client, architect and design team as requested.
  • Develop final designs that support and enhance our sustainability and environmental ambitions.
  • Support consultation and facilitate co‑design with target audiences.
  • Deliver an inclusive experience that is accessible for all.
  • Ensure the displays, interactives etc. are durable and can cope with visitor footfall and handling by visitors of ages and abilities.
  • Manage the content creation process through to completion, including that provided by staff and volunteers.
  • Check built dimensions and specifications prior to installation.
  • Prepare final floorplans, elevations and room views for approval at RIBA 4.
  • Work with the client, audiences and evaluation consultants to provide feedback for evaluation processes.
  • Take responsibility for the health and safety aspects of the exhibition design, including any implications for maintenance and operation, and to ensure coordination of health and safety in the design and installation process.
  • For CDM purposes the architect or main contractor will be Principal Designer.
  • Provide all close‑out information including a comprehensive O&M file, as‑built drawings, final artwork files, all raw and finished audio and digital content.
