Main purpose of role
Lead the technology function, providing strategic and operational leadership across engineering, architecture, platforms, security, technology operations and IT service delivery, including oversight of IT operations and services.
Ensure technology investments, systems and capabilities support business objectives, product strategy and future growth while maintaining high standards of reliability, security, service delivery and engineering excellence.
Drive technical excellence, engineering efficiency, platform reliability and continuous improvement, ensuring technology is used effectively to deliver value for customers, colleagues and the business.
Lead technology security, risk and compliance activities, including the ISO 27001 programme, ensuring successful audits and the continuous improvement of information security controls, governance and processes.
This role provides a strong platform for progression into broader and more senior technology leadership as the organisation grows.
Main duties
- Engineering Leadership
- Lead, develop and inspire the engineering team, fostering a high-performance and collaborative culture.
- Define and embed strong engineering practices across software development, testing and delivery.
- Build a culture of ownership, quality and continuous improvement.
- Coach and develop team members through regular feedback, mentoring and career development planning to build organisational capability and future leadership capacity.
- Technical Architecture and Design
- Own and evolve the technical architecture of core systems and platforms.
- Set engineering standards, principles and design patterns to ensure scalable and maintainable systems.
- Provide technical direction on system design and complex engineering challenges.
- Research, evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, platforms and tools that improve business capability, engineering efficiency and customer outcomes.
- Assess third-party technology solutions and make recommendations on adoption, integration or replacement where appropriate.
- Software Delivery and Execution
- Ensure effective technical planning, prioritisation and risk management across the engineering function.
- Provide technical input into planning and delivery feasibility.
- Platform Reliability and Operations
- Ensure systems are reliable, secure and performant in line with business requirements.
- Accountable for production stability and incident management processes.
- Drive continuous improvement in operational stability and system resilience.
- IT Operations and Service Delivery
- Lead the IT service delivery function, fostering a high-performing, customer-focused culture with a strong focus on continuous improvement and operational excellence.
- Oversee IT operations, including infrastructure, end-user computing, service desk and enterprise systems, ensuring a secure, reliable and scalable technology environment .
- Ensure effective IT service management across incidents, problems and changes to maintain service reliability, performance and business continuity.
- Manage IT suppliers and third-party service providers, ensuring appropriate governance, performance and value for money.
- Contribute to technology budgeting and planning, ensuring alignment between IT services, operational needs and business priorities.
- Ensure IT services are operated in line with cybersecurity, risk, compliance and data protection requirements.
- Act as a key point of contact for IT service performance, risks and issues, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders.
- Security and Technical Risk Management
- Identify, assess and mitigate technical risks within systems and architecture.
- Ensure appropriate security practices are embedded within engineering processes.
- Work with external specialists where required to strengthen cybersecurity capability.
- Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with senior stakeholders across the business to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contribute to strategic discussions by providing technical insight and feasibility assessment.
- Ensure technology decisions support customer needs, business objectives and service excellence.
- Engineering Improvement
- Continuously improve engineering productivity through better tooling, automation and process optimisation.
- Reduce technical debt where it impacts performance, scalability, or delivery efficiency.
- Promote modern engineering practices including CI/CD, testing automation and observability.
- Evaluate and optimise the engineering toolchain, including development, testing, deployment and monitoring platforms, to improve productivity, quality and delivery performance.
- Compliance and Governance
- Ensure systems and practices align with relevant regulatory and data protection requirements.
- Supporting our policies in the interests of good governance and our commitment to B Corp certification.
