The General Labourer / Groundworker is responsible for supporting Mobilisation, Excavation, and Reinstatement (MER) operations across a variety of geotechnical and construction projects. This role involves assisting MER Operatives with site preparation, excavation, material handling, and the reinstatement of excavated areas, ensuring work is performed efficiently and in compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Site Preparation and Mobilisation: Assist with the mobilisation of equipment, tools, and materials to and from the site. Prepare worksites by clearing debris, marking out areas, and ensuring safe access for equipment and personnel. Set up barriers, signage, and traffic management systems as required.
  • Excavation Support: Support MER Operatives during excavation activities by handling tools, assisting with manual digging, and managing materials. Ensure the safe handling of excavated materials, segregating waste for disposal or reuse. Monitor excavation activities, identifying and reporting any safety or operational issues.
  • Reinstatement Activities: Assist in reinstating excavated areas to meet project specifications, including backfilling, compaction, and finishing. Operate basic tools and equipment, such as compactors, shovels, and wheelbarrows, to support reinstatement tasks. Ensure all reinstatement work is completed to a high standard and complies with relevant guidelines.
  • Equipment Handling and Maintenance: Handle and maintain tools, equipment, and machinery in good working condition. Perform basic maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and inspecting tools for damage or wear. Report faulty or damaged equipment to the Site Supervisor promptly.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Adhere to all company HSE policies and site-specific safety protocols. Participate in daily risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safety briefings. Wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Ensure the site is left clean, tidy, and safe at the end of each workday.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Work collaboratively with MER Operatives and other team members to ensure smooth project delivery. Follow instructions and assist with tasks as directed by the Site Supervisor. Communicate effectively with team members to address challenges and maintain productivity.

What we are looking for:

  • Essential Skills & Experience required: Previous experience in general labouring, groundwork, or construction. Basic knowledge of excavation and reinstatement processes. Ability to operate hand tools and basic equipment safely and efficiently. Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental practices in construction. Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour in varying weather conditions.
  • Desirable Skills & Experience: CSCS card or equivalent site certification. Experience in reinstatement activities, such as paving, tarmacking, or landscaping. Familiarity with operating small plant machinery (e.g., compactors, mini excavators). First Aid or other relevant safety training certifications.

Health & Safety Responsibilities:

As a General Labourer / Groundworker, you are responsible for following all HSE policies and procedures on-site. Participating in daily safety briefings and implementing agreed controls. Reporting any safety incidents, hazards, or near-misses to the Site Supervisor.
