We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to join our team at Woodsmith Mine. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive HSE professional with a background in construction, mining, engineering, manufacturing, heavy industry, or similar high-risk operational environments.

The successful candidate will play a key role in developing, implementing, and continuously improving health, safety, and environmental systems across the operation. You will work closely with management and operational teams to drive a positive safety culture, ensure legal compliance, and support the safe delivery of site activities.

Woodsmith Underground Mine, Sneaton, Whitby YO22 5JE

Hours of work

Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 16:00 on site.

You will be required to travel to and from site using the Park & Ride service. The bus departs from the Park & Ride at 07:30 and leaves site at 16:05.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the organisation’s Health & Safety strategy, policies, and procedures
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety performance and reduce incidents
  • Provide expert advice to senior leadership on H&S risks, compliance, and best practice
  • Ensure compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation including HASAWA, CDM Regulations, RIDDOR, COSHH, and PUWER
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, audits, and inspections across all operational areas
  • Manage incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action plans
  • Maintain accurate Health & Safety records and prepare statutory reports
  • Deliver Health & Safety training, inductions, and toolbox talks for employees and contractors
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through engagement, coaching, and communication
  • Support managers in implementing safe systems of work and behavioural safety programmes
  • Monitor workplace conditions, equipment, and processes to identify hazards
  • Oversee emergency preparedness, including fire safety, evacuation plans, and drills
  • Manage contractor safety, ensuring compliance with company and legal requirementsLead Health & Safety committees and coordinate with external regulators including the HSE and local authorities
  • Track and analyse safety KPIs, trends, and performance metrics
  • Produce monthly and annual Health & Safety reports for leadership and regulatory bodies
  • Recommend improvements based on data insights and industry standards

About You

  • Previous Health & Safety experience within construction, building, mining, engineering, manufacturing, infrastructure, or other heavy industrial environments
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and influencing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Competent in incident investigation and risk assessment methodologies
  • Confident delivering training and engaging with diverse teams
  • Minimum of 3+ years’ experience within a Health & Safety leadership role
  • Experience in surface works within mining, construction, engineering, manufacturing, or heavy industry environments is advantageous
  • Strong track record of improving safety performance and organisational culture
  • Proactive and solutions-focused mindset
  • High level of integrity and commitment to workplace safety
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to both challenge and support operational teams
  • Resilient, organised, and detail-oriented approach
  • Ability to manage confidential information securely and professionally
  • Strong ability to prioritise workloads effectively
