Grind is a coffee company that lives in London. Since opening Shoreditch Grind in 2011, we\'ve expanded across London with cafés, coffee trucks and a state-of-the-art coffee roastery. Today, we serve millions of cups of coffee across London and the UK each year, and we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of people make better, more sustainable coffee at home.

You’ll find our coffee beans, compostable coffee pods and ready-to-drink coffee cans in people’s homes, supermarkets across the UK and in hotels around the world.

Based in Shoreditch, we have a team of talented people working on everything from product development to finance, to customer experience. We’re looking for someone to join our growing team and help us in building the future of Grind.

We think coffee can be a force for good. Whether it\'s through creating the UK\'s first compostable coffee pods, our plastic-free packaging or carbon-free shipping - we\'re on a mission to be the world\'s most sustainable coffee company.

In 2023, we created our charity, the Better Coffee Foundation, to undo the damage done by the global coffee industry - in our first year, we recovered 43 million pods\' worth of ocean-bound plastic.

A bit about the role.

As the People and Culture Business Partner for Grind Coffee Roasters (GCR), you will act as the strategic people lead for our Roastery (warehouse & production) and Head Office teams, supporting around 100 high-performing employees across two distinct business units. Reporting directly into the Director of People and Culture, you’ll be a trusted advisor to functional heads—shaping people strategies that accelerate performance, drive operational effectiveness, and fuel Grind’s growth.

This is a high-impact, hands-on role for an experienced HR generalist who thrives in complexity, leads with influence, and champions a progressive, inclusive, and high-performance culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Champion and embed Grind’s culture by partnering with stakeholders to ensure values are lived across all units, shaping a consistent and vibrant employee experience.
  • Partner with unit leaders to understand evolving business needs and develop workforce plans that align talent with current and future organisational goals.
  • Work closely with managers to design effective team structures and job roles that support operational efficiency and strategic growth.
  • Support hiring managers throughout recruitment, ensuring attraction and selection processes are aligned to business needs and Grind’s values.
  • Act as a trusted business partner on employee relations, providing expert advice that balances compliance with a people-first approach.
  • Coach and upskill managers in real time, strengthening leadership capability in handling employee lifecycle.
  • Support managers in setting clear goals, giving regular feedback, and having meaningful development conversations - helping teams stay on track and grow in line with Grind’s values and expectations. Partner with the L&D Business Partner to co-create development programs that build capability, support succession, and drive future readiness.
  • Collaborate with our Talent and People Operations colleagues to review compensation and benefits, ensuring competitive and compliant offerings that support attraction and retention.
  • Leverage people analytics in partnership with People Operations, using data to identify trends, track progress, and drive informed HR and business decisions.

Required Skills, Experience and Attributes:

  • Proven experience as an HR business partner or senior HR generalist.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK labour legislation and HR best practices.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Experience in effectively resolving complex employee relations issues.
  • Demonstrated experience leading HR initiatives in a dynamic and evolving business environment.
  • Ability to drive and manage organisational change.
  • Experience effectively coaching and developing people leaders.
  • Personal experience as a line manager is beneficial.
  • Previous experience in an HR role within a rapidly growing startup environment, and/or a Roastery, warehouse or production facility is an asset.

Qualifications:

  • CIPD level 5 or equivalent – we know that the pathway to HR excellence is not always a qualification so if you have equivalent education or work experience, your application is welcome.
  • Mental Health Support: Access to mental health support services.
  • Referral Bonus: Earn bonuses for referring new employees who you think are a good addition for Grind.
  • Discounts online: Up to 50% off our retail line online.
  • Food & Drink Discounts: 50% off food and drinks at our sites, plus two barista-made free coffees per day.
  • Team Events: Participate in regular team events and enjoy a stocked office with healthy breakfast and snacks.
  • Family & Friend Discounts: Special discounts for family and friends.
  • Enhanced Maternity and Paternity: Enjoy enhanced maternity and paternity benefits once eligible.

Grind is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all candidates and employees. If you require adjustments to the application process please let us know.
