Job Description
To provide integrated leadership of Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental management across Griffon Marine. The postholder will own and continually improve the Integrated Management System, maintain compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, act as the organisation’s competent health and safety adviser, and embed practical assurance, risk management and continuous improvement throughout design, manufacture, shipyard operations and customer support.
The role leads the internal audit function and ensures that audit findings, incidents, non-conformances and improvement actions are investigated, prioritised and brought to effective closure
Objectives

- Provide one clear, accountable lead for Quality, Health, Safety, Environment and the Integrated Management System.
- Maintain legal, regulatory, customer and certification compliance, including successful ISO surveillance and recertification audits.
- Build an effective risk-based internal audit programme, using Internal Audits to provide timely and objective assurance.
- Improve product and process quality by promoting built-in quality, structured problem-solving and robust root-cause analysis.
- Prevent injury, ill health, environmental harm and enforcement action through proactive risk control and visible leadership.
- Deliver measurable improvement through meaningful KPIs, trend analysis and timely completion of corrective actions.
- Create a positive, accountable culture in which managers own compliance and every employee understands the standards expected
Responsibilities
Leadership, governance and team management
- Build, develop and lead the QHSE team, to provide guidance and ensure compliance to regulations, legislation, and accreditation requirements.
- Support development of Internal Audits, setting clear priorities, standards and development plans.
- Provide clear, proportionate advice to the Senior Leadership Team and operational managers on QHSE risks, compliance obligations and improvement priorities.
- Chair or lead relevant Quality, HSE and Continual Improvement forums, ensuring decisions and actions are recorded, owned and closed.
- Establish annual QHSE plans, objectives and budgets aligned with Griffon Marine’s business priorities.
- Promote visible leadership through site walkarounds, engagement, briefings and constructive challenge.
- Ensure responsibilities within the management system are understood and that managers remain accountable for controls within their areas.
Integrated Management System and certification
- Own, maintain and continually improve the Integrated Management System covering ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
- Control the management-system framework, including policies, procedures, process maps, records and document governance.
- Plan and lead management reviews, ensuring performance, risk, opportunities, resources and improvement actions are properly evaluated.
- Act as the principal contact for certification bodies and coordinate surveillance, recertification and customer audits.
- Ensure business-system and process changes are reflected accurately in the Integrated Management System.
Quality management and assurance
- Champion built-in quality across design, procurement, manufacture, testing, commissioning and customer support.
- Develop and maintain risk-based quality plans, inspection and assurance arrangements appropriate to projects and operations.
- Oversee the non-conformance process, ensuring containment, disposition, root-cause analysis, corrective action and effectiveness review are completed to an appropriate standard.
- Lead cross-functional problem-solving using structured root-cause methods and use lessons learned to prevent recurrence.
- Monitor quality trends, cost of poor quality, supplier and process performance, and escalate material concerns.
- Work with Supply Chain and operational teams to support supplier assurance, supplier audits and improvement activity where required.
Health and safety management
- Act as Griffon Marine’s competent person for health and safety and maintain current knowledge of applicable UK legislation and recognised good practice.
- Develop and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, risk assessments, COSHH assessments and safe systems of work.
- Provide assurance over higher-risk shipyard and engineering activities, contractor controls, lifting operations, work equipment, hazardous substances and occupational-health risks, as applicable.
- Lead or oversee accident, incident and near-miss investigations, ensuring proportionate root-cause analysis, statutory reporting where required and effective corrective action.
- Coordinate statutory inspection and compliance arrangements, including relevant lifting equipment, local exhaust ventilation and pressure systems.
- Plan and deliver toolbox talks, briefings, campaigns and targeted training, and liaise with enforcing authorities when necessary.
Environmental management
- Own and develop the Environmental Management System and maintain the register of environmental aspects, impacts and compliance obligations.
- Monitor and improve controls relating to waste, emissions, discharges, spills, energy and resource use.
- Ensure permits, licences, consents, waste documentation and contractor arrangements remain compliant and current.
- Lead environmental risk assessments, emergency and spill-response planning, audits and improvement initiatives.
- Provide clear reporting on environmental performance and support practical sustainability objectives.
Audit, assurance and corrective action
- Create and maintain a risk-based internal audit programme covering all sites, functions and applicable standards.
- Allocate, review and quality-check the work of Internal Auditors, preserving objectivity and auditor independence.
- Personally lead complex, cross-functional, supplier or high-risk audits where senior judgement is required.
- Ensure findings are evidence-based, clearly graded, assigned to appropriate owners and tracked to verified closure.
- Use audit, incident, non-conformance, complaint and KPI data to identify systemic issues and improvement priorities.
- Report overdue or ineffective actions through the agreed escalation route.
Performance, competence and culture
- Develop a balanced QHSE performance dashboard containing meaningful leading and lagging indicators.
- Provide accurate monthly reports, trend analysis and recommendations to senior management.
- Determine QHSE competence and training needs and support effective delivery, evaluation and record keeping.
- Encourage reporting, learning and constructive challenge, while promoting personal accountability and consistent standards.
- Support organisational change, new projects and facilities changes through proportionate QHSE risk assessment and assurance.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Essential:
- QHSE leadership experience in a heavy industrial, marine, manufacturing, fabrication or engineering environment.
- Demonstrable experience managing ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 within an integrated management system.
- Experience leading certification, customer and internal audits and managing corrective actions to effective closure.
- Understanding of UK health, safety and environmental legislation and its practical application.
- Proven experience of quality assurance, non-conformance management, structured investigation and root-cause analysis.
- Experience leading, coaching or coordinating professional staff.
- Ability to influence senior leaders and operational teams, balancing compliance, risk and business delivery.
- Clear written and verbal communication, sound judgement and confidence to challenge unsafe or non-compliant activity.
- Desirable:
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 occupational health and safety qualification.
- Lead Auditor qualification for one or more of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001.
- IEMA qualification or equivalent environmental-management training.
- Chartered or professionally recognised status, or active progression towards it, such as CMIOSH or an appropriate quality/environmental body.
- Experience in shipbuilding, marine engineering, vessel manufacture, commissioning or customer support.
- Training in structured investigation methods such as ICAM or TapRooT.
- Experience of supplier quality assurance, project quality planning and digital business or document-management systems.
Role Authority
- Stop or suspend work where there is an immediate and material risk to people, the environment, product conformity or legal compliance, and escalate accordingly.
- Require appropriate containment, investigation and corrective action for significant incidents, non-conformances and audit findings.
- Escalate unresolved or overdue material risks to the Head of Supply Chain and relevant senior leader.
- Access the records, workplaces and personnel reasonably required to discharge the role, subject to applicable security and confidentiality controls.
Success Measures:
- Continued certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, with audit actions closed effectively and on time.
- A current, risk-based internal audit programme delivered to plan, with clear evidence of learning and improvement.
- Reduction in repeat incidents, repeat non-conformances and overdue corrective actions.
- Improved leading indicators, employee engagement and management ownership of QHSE controls.
- Accurate, timely reporting that enables informed decisions and prioritisation.
