12 Month Cyber Security Engineer Industrial Placement

Please note this role is only for university placement students as part of a year in industry that contributes to the course

At Griffiths Waite (GW), we design and build innovative digital solutions for enterprise clients, combining strong engineering principles, modern technologies and a culture of learning. Our placements offer the opportunity to work alongside experienced platform, security and software engineers while developing real-world skills in protecting the systems our clients rely on.

You’ll be part of a collaborative agile team, helping to build security into how we design, deliver and run digital products. You’ll gain hands‑on experience with Azure cloud security, GitHub security tooling, vulnerability management and secure software delivery, and see how strong, evidenced security helps us earn and keep our clients’ trust.

While the focus of this placement is on Cyber Security, we also welcome applicants with an interest or developing skills in DevOps, software development or artificial intelligence, as securing cloud platforms, delivery pipelines and AI-enabled features is an increasing part of our work.

We’re looking for curious, motivated individuals with a natural flair for understanding how systems can be attacked and how to defend them, who enjoy solving problems and can explain risk in plain language. Experience or interest in cloud security, networking or security tooling would be a great bonus.

What you’ll get from us:

  • Structured onboarding, including an 8 week training period where you’ll build a real product using our core technologies
  • A placement plan with clear, agreed outcomes, including a named contribution to GW’s engineering platform
  • Mentoring and one‑to‑one guidance from experienced Platform, Security and DevOps engineers
  • The chance to work on challenging, high‑impact client projects
  • Exposure to modern security practices including secure‑by‑design, DevSecOps, cloud security and incident response
  • A friendly, inclusive culture built around our values: Brilliance, Trust, Collaboration and Ownership

By the end of the placement, you’ll have developed practical experience in securing production cloud environments and delivery pipelines, gained a strong understanding of how security risk is identified, prioritised and fixed, and owned real security improvements that GW and its clients rely on.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Helping to roll out automated vulnerability alerts across our code repositories, so issues reach the right engineer quickly, and tracking them through to a fix
  • Applying security baselines to repositories, such as branch protection, code scanning and secrets detection
  • Reviewing and improving the security of GW’s engineering platform and Azure environments, including identity, access and network configuration
  • Helping to answer client security questionnaires and building a library of accurate, evidenced answers
  • Supporting the evidence gathering and recurring activities behind our security governance
  • Supporting threat modelling and secure design reviews on client products
  • Contributing to incident response processes, security policies and documentation

Do you have…

  • A natural curiosity for how systems work, how they can fail or be attacked, and how to protect them
  • A strong team‑working ethic with excellent self‑motivation
  • Good communication skills, including explaining technical risk to non‑specialists
  • Sound judgement and a responsible approach to handling sensitive information
  • A passion for technology and an eagerness to learn from experienced engineers

A flair for one or more of the following…

  • Cloud and infrastructure security: Experience or interest in Azure, Linux, networking, firewalls or identity and access management
  • Application security: Secure coding, the OWASP Top 10, code or dependency scanning
  • Security operations: Log analysis, SIEM tools, threat intelligence or incident response
  • Governance and risk: Interest in security frameworks and standards such as ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials or NIST
  • Offensive security: Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions, home labs or ethical hacking platforms

We’re looking for individuals who enjoy solving real‑world problems, want to develop hands‑on technical skills and are excited to help organisations stay secure as they adopt cloud, data and AI.
