The Operative role supports the safe, efficient, and timely delivery of project activities across construction and civil engineering sites. The role ensures that all operational tasks are completed to a high standard and in line with project specifications, company procedures, and safety requirements. The Operative contributes to high‑quality workmanship, maintains compliance with Griffiths Health and Safety systems, and helps prevent rework through consistent, accurate, and safe execution of duties.
Principal Accountability
- Support the safe and timely delivery of site operations in line with project programmes.
- Ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with health and safety procedures, training, and legislative requirements.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship.
- Positively represent the company when interacting with clients, stakeholders, and the public.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Compliance, Health and Safety: Adhering to site health and safety regulations and requirements, Griffiths Health and Safety standards, toolbox talks and RAMS. Report any hazards or unsafe conditions and keep the work environment tidy ensuring safe storage of tools and materials. Ensure competency before undertaking assigned tasks and follow risk controls.
- Operational Duties: Ensure that work is completed at a high quality at all times, report any discrepancies, problems and near misses. Collaborate and work effectively in a team environment, communicating with colleagues and supervisors. Assist with setup of safe working areas, barriers, and signage. Support preparation, execution, and completion of site activities to the required standard. Use tools and equipment safely and correctly in accordance with training.
- Groundworks/Construction Tasks: Excavating and preparing foundations, trenches and substructures. Installing drainage systems, pipelaying, manholes and gullies. Carrying out concrete works, laying kerbs, edging, paving slabs and block paving. Setting out basic works using specific equipment including operating hand tools and plant safely (when/if role permits).
Required experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training:
- Prior experience as an Operative or in a similar role within the Construction/Civil Engineering sector.
- Understands construction health and safety practices and regulations and site information to complete documentation.
- Hold a valid CSCS Card/NPORS card with a CSCS logo (required).
- Able to use tools, equipment and small plant safely.
Desirable experience, qualifications, and training:
- CPCS/NPORS tickets.
- First Aider.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Any additional construction-related training or certification that is relevant to civil engineering activities.
