To support and fulfil the commercial requirements of a project(s), and if required, to include pre-contract support on one or more simultaneous project.

Provide support to Line Manager with works commensurate with the role.

Principal Accountability

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is accountable for, but not limited to, the following within each project(s):

  • Live by, and ensure others do likewise, Griffiths’ Life Saving Rules and reporting requirements.
  • Manage commercial resource allocated in conjunction with HR to include Return to Work, Annual Leave, Performance management and the like, as well as supporting commercial and operational staff with maximising attendance and performance.
  • Take ownership and achieve minimum set/agreed forecast gross site margin.

Initiate actions with Operational lead when project(s) are not achieving set gross site margin.

As required, maintain commercial forecast for turnover and margin for current and next financial year.

  • Timely provision and/or collation and submission/presentation of financial information each reporting period for project(s), which requires commercial staff, if allocated, to provide the information in a timely manner.

  • Experience of the processes and requirements of supplier and sub-contractor procurement. Complying with, and ensuring others comply with, requests to complete as required.
  • Detailed Responsibilities

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is responsible for, but not limited to, the following for project(s):

  • Provide Health and Safety leadership, promote improvements and ensure all staff within project(s) do so.
  • Actively partake in project Health and Safety initiatives, and if allocated, ensure all staff within project remit also do so.
  • Actively partake, and if allocated, ensure all staff within project(s) also partake with the Close Call reporting system and submit close call cards.
  • Comply with, and if allocated, ensure all commercial staff on project(s) comply with the company procedures.
  • Ensure a contract is in place for project(s) in advance of commencement of works. Proficient experience of the contract form(s) being used on allocated project(s).
  • Ensure a purchase order is in place for project(s) in advance of commencement of works.
  • Actively ensures the timely submission of applications and receipt of certificates and cash, and if allocated, ensure that this is of the utmost importance to all commercial staff on project(s).

Provide reporting information on status of applications/certificates/cash.

  • Timely submission of project(s) cashflow per period, and if allocated, ensure commercial staff submit each period for project(s).
  • Mentor, if allocated, subordinate staff on project(s)
  • Ensure that you actively partake in Continuous Professional Development, as well as provide encouragement for all commercial staff to join Griffiths Approved Development Scheme (ADS) and gain professional accreditation.

Act as Mentor and/or Supervisor on the Griffiths ADS.

  • Provide experienced construction knowledge to commercial and operational staff on project(s).
  • Organises own workload, and where allocated, maximise use of commercial resource available/allocated.

Supports resourcing (including forward looking) and manages the team, efficiently and effectively delegating as required.

  • Provide negotiation experience and support to staff on project(s), ensuring you/staff are in full possession of information needed prior to engaging in negotiation.
  • Complete periodic cost control, provision of Whole of Life (Wo L) cost, value and GSM forecast on project(s), in accordance with Best Practice Guidelines.
  • Proficient experience of the process and requirements of change management.

Compiling, and ensuring others comply with submission of notices, evaluation and agreement as required.

  • Ensure accurate records of works are being produced and maintained on each project(s).

Supporting and ensuring any allocated commercial staff understand the importance of record keeping.

  • Experience of compiling and using Bills of Quantities and Activity Schedules, as well as supporting any allocated commercial staff that are producing as required.
  • Ensure a commercial review of the Contract Programme and Programme for Acceptance is undertaken prior to the timely submission for project(s).

Where allocated, provide advice to commercial staff in assessing delay and disruption on project(s) as required.

  • Experience of the process and requirements of subcontract management to include timely issue of Payment Notices and/or Pay less Notices against subcontract assessments, and agreement of final accounts.

Supporting others to comply with requirements, as required.

  • Regular attendance and lead commercial discussion at project client meetings as required on project(s), and if allocated ensuring all commercial staff attend meetings as required.
  • Support pre-contract bid/no bid estimating function.

Allocate staff or complete works as required to support timely submission of pricing works that will fall within project remit.

  • Seek support, if required, and provide advice to other staff (commercial and operational) to minimise disputes with client and subcontractors on project(s).
  • Ensure all contracts and sub-contracts provide minimum requirement for insurance on all projects within remit.
  • Experience of the importance, principles, and key issues of sustainability within the civil engineering industry.
  • Actively support and promote an inclusive culture by personal actions and challenge those who act in an unacceptable manner.
  • Maintain current construction affairs awareness, supporting other commercial staff to do likewise.
  • Collation and presentation of commercial analysis work as requested.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and / or training to fulfil.
  • Required experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training
  • A Degree or relevant Higher Qualification or enrolled onto a relevant course and ongoing.
  • Experience in a similar role, with Civil Engineering experience essential.

Any other relevant construction industry experience may also be taken into consideration.

Proficient experience of NEC3/4 forms of contract.

  • Membership of a relevant professional body or working towards full membership if not already attained.
  • Experience of relevant construction methodology commensurate with industry experience, learning from current project(s) and supporting other commercial staff in utilising the opportunity to learn new methodologies.
  • A passion for safety evidenced by a minimum requirement of a CSCS card commensurate with position.
  • See things from the customer’s perspective and address underlying customer needs. Maintain regular contact with client counterpart to benefit company relationship.
  • Initiate improvements, spot opportunities to develop new ideas and improve performance.
  • Define clear objectives, expectations & roles.

Involve others in decisions and ideas where appropriate.

Demonstrate leadership skills commensurate with position.

Be willing to adapt leadership skills as required.

  • Help individuals to understand their strengths and weaknesses & encourage them to take responsibility for development by actively partaking in Griffiths’ annual development review for self, as well as carry out annual development reviews for allocated commercial staff.
  • Ensure that all communications are commensurate with position in the business and effective.

Provide support to allocated resource with communications skills and proof reading as required.
