Today we’re following Ash, one of our Assistant Project Managers, to understand what a day in his work life looks like.
Currently, I am involved with the regeneration of Great Yarmouth marketplace as well as supporting Norfolk County Council on their Norwich transport programme.
My role as an APM involves being part of the project team to help deliver projects successfully. I currently undertake weekly visits to the Great Yarmouth marketplace site to monitor how the works are progressing and am in regular contact with contractors, designers, and stakeholders to ensure the projects run smoothly day-to-day. As part of our monthly reporting, I produce and maintain financial trackers, risk registers, programmes, and presentations alongside the Project Manager and Project Officer to keep the Client informed on progress.
This week I have undertaken a weekly site visit to Great Yarmouth and held our fortnightly delivery team meeting with Tarmac. The project is nearing completion and we are proud to be able to deliver a new regenerated space for the people of Great Yarmouth. We will soon be resurfacing a car park nearby to the marketplace, so I have been contacting local businesses and working with the contractor to develop the traffic management plan before the works commence. In addition, I have been supporting Norfolk County Council, as well as providing some programme support for our project team currently working with East Suffolk Council.
Construction is a very rewarding industry, as our work delivers very tangible results for our clients and the wider community. I came into project management from working on the tools and it is great to use that practical knowledge to have an input on the best way to build something or solving a tricky problem on site. Schemes like Hay Hill in Norwich and the Great Yarmouth marketplace scheme have developed my experience in leading projects along with managing the behind the scenes operations. Working at Greyfriars has been a great opportunity to do this and I look forward to gaining more knowledge and experience with the new projects we are undertaking this year.
Working with a great team of people on a daily basis to deliver transformational projects to clients is a fantastic experience and makes the role of an assistant project manager a very rewarding job to undertake.
