Role Purpose

We are looking for a motivated and organised Trainee Transport Planner to join our Transport Operations team. This role is ideal for individuals looking to develop their career within transport and logistics while gaining the skills and experience needed to progress into operational or supervisory positions.

Development Programme

As part of this role, you will undertake an 8-month Level 2 Traffic Operator Apprenticeship development programme featuring monthly online tutor-led sessions, supported by industry-trained specialist tutors. The programme combines interactive online work-based learning modules with practical on-the-job experience, alongside regular progress reviews and End Point Assessment (EPA) preparation to support your development within transport and logistics operations. In addition, there is an optional opportunity to gain the Level 3 CILT Transport Management CPC (Road Haulage) qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and organisation of nationwide deliveries and collections.
  • Plan loads using a fleet of articulated vehicles, maximising service and vehicle efficiency.
  • Manage trailer movements to ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Liaise with warehouse teams and on-site shunters to ensure vehicle and trailer availability.
  • Monitor delivery performance, vehicle utilisation and revenue KPIs.
  • Communicate collection times and delivery bookings with customers and colleagues.
  • Attend regular operational meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure all work is accurately booked and managed through internal systems.
  • Maintain and update Transport Management Systems (TMS).
  • Complete general administration duties, including data entry and record keeping.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures and health and safety standards.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively at all levels.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good geographical knowledge of the UK.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage changing priorities.
  • Flexible, proactive and solution-focused approach.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Committed to study and pass a Level 2 Traffic Operator Apprenticeship.
  • GCSE's (or Equivalent) in English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above.
