Why This Role Matters
As a Driver Training Officer, you will develop driver capability, compliance, and safety across the business by delivering effective training programmes, supporting operational teams, and driving continuous improvement in driver performance and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver proactive driver training interventions in accordance with Group Policies and Processes.
- Deliver local driver inductions, driver development programmes, skills training, Potential New Driver (PND) assessments, Long Semi-Trailer (LST) training, manual handling training, and vehicle familiarisation sessions.
- Delegate appropriate training activities to depot-based Driver Development Coaches (DDCs).
- Support the business in maintaining sufficient Driver Development Coach coverage across all depots and provide training delivery where Driver Development Coach resource is unavailable.
- Build strong working relationships with operational management teams and collaborate closely with the central Learning & Development department.
- Deliver remote Driver CPC courses annually from January to April and support planned Driver CPC training weeks, providing full-week CPC course delivery as required.
- Deliver the Driver Smart 360 CPC programme throughout the year.
- Deliver approved Driver CPC courses in accordance with Driver CPC Centre standards and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to the review, development, enhancement, and continuous improvement of driver training materials and programmes.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and auditable driver training records in line with company policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional competence through ongoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
- Attend annual Driver Training Continuous Professional Development events and CPC course familiarisation sessions.
- Full training and development will be provided where required, including PRIM Fleet Assessor, IOSH Managing Safely, Manual Handling Instructor, Level 3 Award in Education and Training, First Aid at Work, and all relevant SSOW and induction training.
Requirements:
- Must hold a valid UK Class 1 CE Licence, with a minimum of 3 years' driving experience and a clean driving record (no more than 3 penalty points).
- Experience of driver coaching, training, or assessment.
- Experience working within a transport or logistics operation.
- Strong knowledge of LGV driver rules, regulations, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Good understanding of transport operations, driver activity, risk assessments, and Safe Systems of Work.
- Excellent coaching, communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with drivers, managers, and key stakeholders.
- Strong planning, organisational, and prioritisation skills, with excellent attention to detail.
- Data analysis skills and confidence using digital systems and technology, including training records, reporting, and compliance tracking.
- Strong safety-first mindset and professional integrity.
- Willingness to adapt to changing schedules and travel as required to support multiple sites.
