Job Description: We are seeking an experienced HGV Auto Electrician to join our team, specialising in electrical installations across commercial vehicles. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with 12V and 24V systems, particularly within commercial vehicle environments, and be confident installing, diagnosing, and maintaining a range of electrical equipment including tracking systems, CCTV/camera solutions, and other ancillary vehicle technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Samsara Telematics Installation Programme, assisting in the deployment of 1,480 telematics devices across HGVs, LCVs, and trailers, ensuring all units are installed, configured, and validated to deliver real-time fleet data, AI-driven driver insights, live temperature monitoring, and unified fleet management capability.
  • Install, maintain, and repair auto-electrical systems across HGVs, LCVs, trailers, and commercial vehicles, delivering work to the highest safety and quality standards.
  • Fit, configure, and validate vehicle tracking systems, telematics hardware, and multi-camera solutions across tractor units and refrigerated trailers, following approved procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality installation.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical faults using appropriate tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic techniques for accurate fault-finding and effective repair.
  • Work confidently with 12V and 24V electrical systems, applying safe working practices and robust technical standards.
  • Travel nationwide between sites, including occasional overnight stays, to complete installation, service, and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation, including installation records, fault reports, and service logs, ensuring all information is captured promptly and professionally.
  • Coordinate work during vehicle downtime with fleet and operations teams, minimising disruption and ensuring vehicles and assets are efficiently equipped with telematics technology.
  • This role covers a mix of day, back-shift, and weekend working to support vehicle inspections and fleet availability.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as an Auto Electrician/Diagnostics Technician in HGV and commercial vehicles, including ancillary installs and FMS/OBD/CAN-bus integrations.
  • Strong diagnostic skills using multiple diagnostic tools and vehicle software; able to interpret fault codes, reprogram systems, and provide clear technical solutions.
  • Solid knowledge of 12V/24V systems, able to read wiring diagrams, build circuits, route wiring safely, and apply correct circuit protection and Ohm's Law.
  • Hands-on experience installing tracking, CCTV/multi-camera, and telematics systems, following digital installation plans accurately.
  • Good inventory management, ensuring components are logged, allocated, and stocked appropriately.
  • Able to work independently and safely, with strong communication and the ability to plan and prioritise workload.
  • Full UK driving licence (HGV licence beneficial but not essential).

Desirable:

  • IMI AE Units (Auto Electrical VCQ/VRQ) qualification.
  • Working toward or holding an NVQ Level 3 in Installation & Maintenance of Auto Electrical Systems.
  • Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance (Electrical Pathway).
