Greenwell Gleeson have been retained to recruit a Managing Director position for a well-established and profitable professional services business based in Cheshire. Reporting to the Chairman, the MD will be tasked with helping define and deliver the growth strategy both organically and through targeted acquisition. They will need to lead a highly motivated workforce, develop sales strategy and widen service offering, ensure continued compliance with industry legislation, ensure IT infrastructure adequately supports current and future business needs and importantly, keep a tight control on costs and drive profitability.

Outline of the Role:

My client is seeking to recruit a commercially minded Managing Director to drive sustained growth within the business. They will demonstrate leadership at all levels and take responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations, resources, and overall direction of an organisation.

Role Priorities:

  • Leadership and Team Management: Provide company-wide leadership to execute agreed strategy. Play leading role at board level to help define company strategy and direction. Lead, mentor, and manage a team, ensuring high levels of motivation, performance, and alignment with company goals as well as encouraging professional development. Set clear performance targets and regularly evaluate team performance against these metrics. Provide clear and effective communication across the business and foster an inclusive culture.
  • Market Understanding and Business Development: Analyse the local market landscape, identifying trends and opportunities, monitor competitive activity and adjust strategies to maintain a competitive edge. Develop and implement strategic plans to drive business growth and market penetration. Seek opportunities to develop product offering and explore new market sectors.
  • Customer Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction and retention. Act as the primary point of contact for major clients. Work closely with the sales team to ensure that customer interactions are consistent with the company's values and objectives.
  • Sales Strategy and Execution: Develop and execute a comprehensive sales strategy that aligns with overall company goals and drives revenue growth. Oversee the sales pipeline, ensuring that targets are met or exceeded and continuously optimise the sales process to deliver value to customers.
  • Operational Management: Oversee all operational aspects of the business to ensure efficiency and profitability. Optimise operational efficiency and effectiveness across all departments, including setting performance metrics, monitoring operational performance, and implementing improvements as needed.
  • Financial Management: Manage the company P&L and budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to achieve maximum return on investment. Provide regular reports on sales performance, market trends, and other relevant metrics to senior management.
  • IT Management: Take ownership of the companywide IT infrastructure. Play key role in optimising IT capabilities across the businesses. Ensure systems and processes to adequately support current and future business requirements.
  • Compliance: Keep abreast of industry-specific legislation changes and formulate appropriate strategy to mitigate any risk and capitalise on any opportunities. Work with external partners to ensure fully compliant with current legislation. Provide good corporate governance, ensuring that appropriate systems and internal controls are implemented, maintained and audited. Maintain memberships, partnership and affiliation with industry bodies.

Personal Experience & Attributes:

  • 10+ years of experience in a senior leadership role.
  • Strong business acumen, broad understanding of all areas of management (Sales, Operations, Finance, etc.).
  • Able to take a holistic business approach whilst maintaining a strong grip on detail.
  • Robust character, self-starter able to operate autonomously.
  • Comfortable in fast-paced dynamic company with Owner Manager culture.
  • Related industry experience would be a preference. Strong understanding of the local market and experience in business development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large team with proven track record in managing and developing high-performing sales teams.
  • Excellent leadership, team management and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels.
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical abilities.
  • Proficiency in CRM software and sales analytics tools.
