Job Title: Forklift Driver
Job Summary
The Forklift Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of forklifts and other material‑handling equipment within the shipyard. This role supports vessel repair and maintenance by transporting materials, equipment, and supplies while complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate forklifts and other lifting equipment safely within the shipyard and dock areas
- Load, unload, move, and stack materials such as steel, pipes, pallets, machinery, and ship components
- Transport materials between storage areas, workshops, docks, and vessels
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report defects or maintenance requirements
- Secure loads correctly and ensure weight limits are not exceeded
- Follow shipyard safety procedures, traffic rules, and risk assessments
- Assist with general yard duties when required, including manual handling
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, crane operators, and other trades
- Maintain accurate records of materials moved, if required
Health & Safety
- Comply with all shipyard health and safety policies
- Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Identify and report hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately
- Work safely in wet conditions, and high‑noise environments as required
Qualifications & Requirements
- Valid forklift licence/certification (counterbalance heavy‑duty preferred)
- Proven experience operating forklifts in industrial, dockyard, or construction environments
- Good understanding of load stability and weight limits
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Overtime to suit the needs of the business
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in a shipyard, port, or marine environment
- Experience handling oversized or heavy loads
- Banksman or slinger/signaller training
- Familiarity with health and safety regulations (e.g., COSHH, manual handling)
Physical & Working Conditions
- Physically demanding role requiring lifting, bending, and prolonged standing
- Shift work, overtime, weekends, and night shifts may be required
- Exposure to noise, dust, and marine conditions
