The Forklift Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of forklifts and other material-handling equipment within the shipyard. This role supports vessel repair and maintenance by transporting materials, equipment, and supplies while complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate forklifts and other lifting equipment safely within the shipyard and dock areas
- Load, unload, move, and stack materials such as steel, pipes, pallets, machinery, and ship components
- Transport materials between storage areas, workshops, docks, and vessels
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report defects or maintenance requirements
- Secure loads correctly and ensure weight limits are not exceeded
- Follow shipyard safety procedures, traffic rules, and risk assessments
- Assist with general yard duties when required, including manual handling
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, crane operators, and other trades
- Maintain accurate records of materials moved, if required
Health & Safety
- Comply with all shipyard health and safety policies
- Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Identify and report hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately
- Work safely in wet conditions, and high-noise environments as required
Qualifications & Requirements
- Valid forklift licence/certification (counterbalance heavy-duty preferred)
- Proven experience operating forklifts in industrial, dockyard, or construction environments
- Good understanding of load stability and weight limits
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Overtime to suit the needs of the business
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in a shipyard, port, or marine environment
- Experience handling oversized or heavy loads
- Banksman or slinger/signaller training
- Familiarity with health and safety regulations (e.g., COSHH, manual handling)
Physical & Working Conditions
- Physically demanding role requiring lifting, bending, and prolonged standing
- Shift work, overtime, weekends, and night shifts may be required
- Exposure to noise, dust, and marine conditions
