Role Overview

The overall purpose for the role is to develop and deliver an evidence based psychological service for children and young people in residential care who have experienced trauma, neglect, or abuse. The postholder will provide specialist psychological assessments, contribute to care planning and risk management, and offer consultation and support to residential staff and multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct (with the child) and indirect (with the teams) psychological services across all nine children’s homes ensuring input to care planning and risk management.
  • Deliver psychological assessments and formulations with children and young people who have complex trauma histories.
  • Provide consultation and training to residential care staff and other professionals.
  • Contribute to the development of trauma-informed care pathways and deliver therapeutic parenting in residential childcare training.
  • Participate in service evaluation and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to audit and reporting processes.

Teaching, Training & Development

  • Deliver training on trauma-informed practice and psychological approaches to care teams.
  • Support reflective practice and supervision for staff.
  • Contribute to the development of internal protocols and best practice guidelines.

Systems & Equipment

  • Use electronic record systems for psychological assessment reports and intervention planning and outcomes.
  • Maintain proficiency in IT systems for communication, reporting, and data management.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to emotionally distressing material and behaviours that challenge.
  • Travel between homes required.
  • High levels of concentration and emotional resilience needed.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of the psychology department.
  • Using own initiative and demonstrating adaptability in managing own workload while responding to the overall needs of the organisation.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Honours degree in Psychology (GBR eligible).
  • Postgraduate qualification in Applied Psychology for Children and Young People or equivalent.
  • Experience working in residential or looked-after children settings.
  • Experience delivering CBT and other psychological interventions.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary settings.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to manage caseload and prioritise.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Understanding of child development and the impact of trauma.
  • Awareness of safeguarding and risk.
  • Knowledge of the residential care system in Scotland management.
  • Emotional resilience and self-care awareness.
