The Automation & Control Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and deployment of control solutions for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Working within a multi-disciplinary engineering team under the guidance and support of Automation Team Lead, this role spans the full project lifecycle from establishing control philosophies and system architectures to on-site commissioning and end-user handover. The nature of this work requires a candidate who is technically grounded, highly adaptable, and able to operate effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where requirements and technologies evolve continuously.
Job Descriptions
- Collaborate with the engineering and project team to design and deploy BESS solutions that fulfil the technical requirements of each project.
- Develop control philosophies, system architectures, and technical specifications tailored to each project’s scope and constraints.
- Develop PLC and SCADA programs across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring that all code is modular, scalable, and well-documented for long-term maintainability.
- Configure and troubleshoot system communications across a range of industrial protocols like Modbus and CAN.
- Liaise with vendors to ensure seamless integration of third-party systems into the overall control architecture.
- Carry out on-site commissioning, functional testing and formal handover of completed systems to the end user, including troubleshooting activities.
- Maintain thorough and up-to-date project documentation throughout all phases.
- Provide technical input to support the sales and business development team in evaluating project feasibility and capability alignment.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by superiors.
Job Requirements
- Preferably a Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Power Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in automation, control systems, or related engineering field.
- Demonstrated experience in PLC programming (text-based) is required.
- Prior exposure to BESS, renewable energy, or grid-connected systems is an advantage.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols, including Modbus (TCP/RTU), CAN, IEC61850.
- Exposure to additional protocols is advantageous; and willingness to learn new ones as required is essential.
- Ability to work across different hardware and software platforms as project requirements dictate, without reliance on a single ecosystem.
- Adaptable and composed when project requirements, tools, or methods change mid-execution.
- Demonstrates a systematic approach to problem-solving, with organised thinking, structured execution and thorough documentation.
- Tests and validates progressively at each stage.
- Proficient in spoken and written Chinese, as the role requires reviewing technical documents and communicating with Chinese-speaking clients, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Ability to travel at short notice.
