Royal Mencap Society is a leading UK charity working alongside people with a learning disability, their families and carers to ensure they are valued equally, listened to, and supported to live life to the full. As Mencap delivers its bold new strategy, the organisation is strengthening its Board to ensure it remains financially resilient, well governed, and firmly focused on delivering lasting impact.

We are seeking an exceptional senior leader to join the Trustee Board as Chair of the Audit, Finance and Risk Committee. This is a pivotal governance role, offering the opportunity to shape financial oversight, risk assurance and control at the heart of a nationally significant, purpose-driven organisation.

Working closely with the Chair of the Board and fellow Trustees, the Chief Executive, Chief Financial Officer and Executive team, you will provide strategic leadership across audit, finance and risk at Board level. You will ensure the Board has clear, robust and accessible assurance on financial sustainability and governance. You will lead the Committee, oversee the Annual Report and Accounts, guide the relationship with external auditors, and provide confident, constructive challenge to the Executive.

You will bring significant senior experience in finance, audit or risk – ideally at Board or executive level – alongside strong committee leadership experience and the ability to translate complex financial and risk information into clear, insightful governance oversight. You will be a strategic thinker with sound judgement, independence of mind, and a commitment to high standards of governance and accountability. Above all, you will be motivated by purpose.

This is a voluntary Trustee role within a values-led organisation where lived experience, inclusion and collaboration are central. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of learning disability, or a close connection to someone with a learning disability. You will join a committed and effective Board working collectively to ensure Mencap remains financially strong and able to deliver its mission for years to come.
