About the Role

The EHS Manager is responsible for ensuring the organisation and its employees adhere to all relevant Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) standards and life-saving safety rules. The role plays a key part in shaping and maintaining a strong safety culture across the site and wider business. This position involves implementing organisational safety rules, promoting safe working practices, and carrying out regular inspections to ensure compliance, prevent incidents, and improve operational efficiency and employee wellbeing. The EHS Manager will deliver safety training, collaborate closely with operational, facilities, and quality teams, and work across multiple departments to continuously improve working standards. The role is offered on a contract basis and is ideal for an experienced EHS professional who can step into a live environment and add value quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement site-level EHS strategies aligned with corporate objectives and local regulatory requirements
  • Lead EHS performance for the site, supporting cross-functional leadership teams
  • Drive continuous improvement through performance metrics, audits, inspections, and risk assessments
  • Review and develop risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Ensure all work procedures meet internal standards and UK EHS legal requirements
  • Maintain full compliance with UK health, safety, and environmental legislation
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess their impact on operations
  • Lead incident investigations, identify root causes, and implement preventative actions
  • Share lessons learned and best practices with stakeholders across the business
  • Report on EHS performance, objectives, and key performance indicators
  • Oversee and ensure the safe working practices of contractors and third parties
  • Deliver in-house health & safety training and awareness sessions
  • Act as an EHS ambassador, supporting the implementation and monitoring of the EHS Management System
  • Support and review EHS plans, risk assessments, and permits to work
  • Develop and maintain site emergency response plans and incident management processes
  • Act as the primary EHS point of contact for employee representatives and safety committees
  • Prepare and present EHS topics at employee and leadership meetings
  • Conduct accident and incident investigations and support safety walks
  • Plan, conduct, and track EHS inspections and corrective actions
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of EHS management systems
  • Coordinate ISO 14001 (Environmental) and ISO 45001 (Health & Safety) certifications and audits
  • Oversee environmental programmes including waste, emissions, and energy usage
  • Assign and track mandatory EHS training for employees, contractors, and contingent workers
  • Manage EHS data, reporting, KPIs, and non-conformance actions
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior stakeholders

Required Skills

  • Strong experience in EHS / HSE management within industrial, manufacturing, or engineering environments
  • In-depth knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation
  • Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems
  • Risk assessments, incident investigation, and contractor safety management
  • EHS audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring
