Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust provides a wide range of inpatient and community-based mental health care to people living in Bolton, the city of Manchester, city of Salford, Trafford and Wigan and a wide range of specialist mental health and substance misuse services across Greater Manchester and beyond. We are one of the largest Mental Health Trusts in England, employing more than 7,000 members of staff with c.£526 million annual income, delivering services from more than 122 locations including five hospital sites, many community facilities and in prisons. Promoting parity of esteem for mental health with physical health, we are shifting our focus to prevention, early intervention, and resilience in communities, to deliver a sustainable and integrated mental health system across the region through collaboratively working with our partners across the Greater Manchester Integrated Care System.

Our new Chief Medical Officer will join at a critical time as we embark on a journey of transformation. As an Executive Director and voting member on the Board, you will play a central role in all aspects of clinical leadership and the assurance of the quality and safety of our services. Engaging colleagues in a culture of learning, improvement and innovation, you will ensure we embed an open culture with the expectation of high standards of quality of care for all our service users and their carers. Ensuring safety and good practice in all services, your leadership skills will progress our journey and build confidence with our colleagues and the people we serve.

The role will have statutory and regulatory functions of the Chief Medical Officer role, and the postholder will also be the principal source of professional medical advice to the Chair, Chief Executive, Board of Directors and Executive colleagues and will be responsible for the pharmacy provision in the Trust.

  • Essential Medical qualification and appropriate Royal College membership or fellowship
  • Full GMC registration
  • Consultant psychiatrist with CCST
  • Evidence of revalidation with license to practice
  • NHS leadership competency framework for board members
  • Experience
    • Essential Experience of Medical Management in a leadership position at or close to the Board level in a mental health provider
    • Experience of leading and managing service transformation and change with a proven track record of achieving improvement in quality and safety
    • Evidence of successfully developing and implementing service user, carer and public involvement strategies
    • Evidence of successfully developing and implementing quality assurance systems, safety, risk management, infection control and governance strategies
    • Evidence of involvement of leading change through people and securing high performance by effective collaborative working and empowering others
  • Knowledge
    • Essential Up to date knowledge of current health agenda
    • Sound expertise in clinical governance and effective systems of medical management such as job planning, appraisal and clinical assessment
    • Understanding of medical recruitment and training matters
    • An understanding of the role of management and clinical contribution to the overall Trust agenda
    • Knowledge and/or experience of policy development at national level
