We are delighted to open this exciting opportunity to join Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust as the Corporate Director of Nursing and Quality. Working to the Chief Nurse , the Corporate Director of Nursing & Quality is responsible for the highest possible standards of patient care and safety, championing an environment/culture that promotes and supports patients, staff and visitors.

As a senior nursing and quality leader within the Trust, the postholder provides strategic clinical leadership, direction and oversight for the responsibilities within their portfolio.

The portfolio will include Infection Prevention and Control, Physical Health, PSIRF, Customer Service as well as Inquests and coronial activity. In addition the postholder will be the senior clinical advisor for strategic and high profile mental health concerns, provide senior clinical expertise on matters pertaining to sexual safety and the built clinical environment. The role includes chairing and being a member of Groups and Committees and sub-committees of the Board.

The Corporate Director of Nursing will report to the Chief Nurse and have responsibilities to the Deputy Chief Nurse aligned to the Job Description.

  • A senior nursing and quality leader accountable for the clinically facing functions and associated activity within the organisation and those that interface externally e.g. with system partners, regulators and agencies.
  • Ensure all portfolio functions are underpinned by robust frameworks that provide assurance, flag and escalate risks, meet legal and regulatory requirements. Oversee clinical governance performance ensuring criteria is met and standards achieved/maintained and that activity withstands the highest levels of scrutiny and challenge.
  • Senior Trust lead for promoting a culture where staff feel psychologically safe reportingevents and concerns, that they are empowered to learn from mistakes and there is confidence in learning frameworks that will prevent potential future harm and improve
  • practice.
  • Act as Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control, deputising for the DIPC as required and providing robust leadership of the IPC and vaccination function for GMMH. Hold oversight for the Trust response to any major outbreak or pandemic scenarios ensuring strategic leadership alongside EPRR
  • Deputise for the Chief Nurse as delegated ensuring all concerns are addressed, objectives achieved and associated risks managed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Pay Enhancements – 30% additional for Evenings (8pm onwards) and Saturdays and 60% additional for Sundays and Bank holidays.
  • 27 days annual leave plus bank holidays rising to 29 after 5 years and 33 days after 10 years
  • Professional Nursing Registration: Mental Health.
  • Masters degree qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience working at a senior level in clinical governance, risk and safety.
  • Senior Leadership training including NHS programmes or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Patient Safety Specialist

Experience and Knowledge

  • Significant experience of leadership, management and operating at or close to Director level.
  • Experience of directing Infection Prevention Control agenda including vaccination campaigns/outbreak oversight
  • Significant experience in managing high profile patient safety concerns/directing and agreeing actions in response to concerns/complaints and incidents
  • Significant experience in the management of clinical environments and the assessment of clinical risk across a range of MH settings.
  • Significant expertise in healthcare regulation and response, developed through substantial experience in managing complex regulatory environments.
  • Expert knowledge and substantial experience of clinical safety compliance and, professional clinical standards
  • Demonstrates experience in interpreting and applying legislation to clinical environments, providing subject matter expertise to such scenarios eg. Supreme Court Ruling
  • Extensive experience of work, preparation of reports, presentations, briefings at regional and national level and recognition of this.
  • Successful delivery of large-scale, system-wide projects with measurable improvements in safety and quality outcomes
  • Proven credibility with regulators and external stakeholders.
  • Effective relationship management demonstrated with experience of working successfully with senior clinical professionals with demonstrable outcome and impact.

  • Communicate highly complex /contentious information influencing change to senior individuals within and outside the organisation
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
  • Presentations at critical, large scale/high profile events e.g. scrutiny/challenge summits, consultations, conferences.

  • Strategic influencing skills at all levels of the organisation including Trust Board.
  • Ability to work in a complex environment – politically aware.
  • Ability to think clearly, facilitate and challenge appropriately to ensure risks to the Trust is managed.
  • Credibility across professional and organisational boundaries and proven ability to gain support from Chief Executives, Directors and senior decision making staff in all agencies.
  • Able to understand, interpret and implement knowledge generated from complex data.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills to create and maintain effective teams.

Mental Effort

  • Reviewing national and local policies, scrutinising reports
  • Reviewing incidents such of homicides, safety incidents CQC/ technical regulatory issues, breaches, inspections and activity, escalations of clinical risk, issues delegated by Executives.

Emotional Effort

  • Dealing with details of patient safety events including death – statements, CCTV, escalated carer/family issues, complaints. Dealing with staff including senior staff in emotional circumstances.
