London Trams (LT) is the business unit within London Rail responsible for providing the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the LT network. The LT network in Croydon currently extends to 28km of rail with 35 trams and an annual ridership of circa 31m. The Track Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the track infrastructure is maintained within established tolerance levels through the systematic inspection and maintenance (planned and preventative) of the assets and documentation of inspections and maintenance. The job holder is responsible for carrying out all works required to deliver a track infrastructure that enables the safe and reliable delivery of a service to meet the business requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for undertaking track patrols to inspect the condition and integrity of all track assets in line with LT standards and for producing inspection reports detailing any faults found with details on rectification required to ensure the asset condition is supportive of a safe, reliable and efficient service to passengers.
  • Accountable for attending, assessing and fixing emergency track faults when reported. Accountable for confirmation that all works are completed, that they have been undertaken in line with LT standards and declaring the track as fit for service.
  • Responsible for reporting and monitoring any deficiencies or deterioration in asset condition along with proposed re‑remediation and timescales such that suitable intervention or renewal can be scheduled.
  • Responsible for installing, commissioning, inspecting and maintaining sprung and electrical points mechanisms and for ensuring points are fully functional and operating safely before offering for service.
  • Manage contractors undertaking track maintenance activities including rail stressing, re‑railing, ballast dropping, kango packing, track tamping and rail grinding. Monitor and provide assurance that the works are carried out to the requirements and that the asset is fit for service.
  • Responsible for ensuring that track is monitored during hot weather and applying appropriate controls and mitigations where required to ensure the ongoing safe operation of the tramway.
  • Install and maintain S&C, expansion switches, lubricators and fishplates.
  • Undertake other safety critical duties such as lookout, worksite supervisor and possession supervisor.

Mechanical and Civil Engineering skills relevant to Track.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • A self‑starter capable of working on their own initiative.
  • An adaptable and flexible approach to work, capable of adjusting priorities to respond to daily challenges and opportunities.
  • Able to explain requirements concisely and influence others to cooperate with the requirements for the business.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Analytical approach to data management and problem solving. High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of safe working and the HASAWA (Essential)
  • Knowledge of the principles of tramway / railway safety processes and procedures (Desirable)
  • National Certificate in Engineering or similar (Desirable)
  • In‑depth knowledge of track tools and equipment, construction, inspection, and maintenance techniques (Essential)
  • LT AP License Holder (Desirable)
  • LT TPS/TWS License holder (Essential)
  • Safety Critical Licenses for Track Inspection and Track Handback (Desirable)
  • Safety Critical Points Mech Inspection and maintenance license (Desirable)
  • Possess a clean, full driving licence as you may be required to drive company vehicles on an ad‑hoc basis (Essential)

Experience

  • Experienced in the maintenance of records and maintenance of an audit trail.
  • Use of Microsoft Office standard packages.
  • Use of SAP or similar systems is desirable.
  • Use of electronic asset management and collaborative working systems is desirable.
  • Proven experience of working in the track environment.
