PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

  • Controls and co-ordinates all movements within the New Depot and across the interface with Network Rail Maintained Infrastructure (NRMI).
  • To ensure the protection of staff working on trains and/or infrastructure outside the limits of depot protection systems in maintenance buildings.
  • To provide a single point of contact on the depot for various external authorities and suppliers as well as internal and third party customers.
  • To provide support for the DOM, fleet control and the depot team leader in the management of the GWR fleet.

ROLE ACOUNTABILITIES

  • Assisting with the planning, controlling and reporting on the movement of trains on and off the depot and within the depot boundaries including operation of the train movement control system, carriage washing plant and other signalling equipment provided.
  • Controlling all train crew, manoeuvres working on the depot including the implementation procedures as required by company policy on drugs and alcohol.
  • Create and maintain the necessary safe conditions for work activity.
  • Be directed by and respond to the Shift Production Manager on issues of service delivery.
  • Liaison with the Team Leader and others to arrange arrival and departure of stock and utilisation of drivers.
  • Implementing accident and emergency procedures including investigating and reporting on operational incidents and near misses, interviewing persons involved and witnesses, invoking β€œfor cause” screening as required by company policy on drugs and alcohol and recommending changes and developments to depot operating procedures as required.
  • Co-ordinating the activities of contractors providing services in connection with train operations including security teams and staff transport to and from site and communicating with and co-ordinating the activities of external authorities and emergency services on operational and emergency matters affecting the depot.
  • Planning and controlling possessions for infrastructure repairs and and reporting and progressing the repair of depot infrastructure including permanent way, signalling, operational telecommunications and radio systems, overhead line traction power systems in accordance with current rules and procedures.
  • Maintaining effective communications with third party customers in conjunction with Team Leader in order to receive and despatch rolling stock and deal with events in accordance with contract terms.
  • Call out β€˜Track Maintainer\’ as required to facilitate track defects.

KEY SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The post is a direct report to the Depot Operations Manager and is responsible for the safe movement of trains and the provision of safe areas of work outside the depot buildings
  • Comply with Great Western Safety Standards at all times.
  • Ensure your personal safety and that of others at all times.
  • Report any hazards, unusual occurrences, security breaches or unsafe practices in the prescribed manner and participate in the Injury Prevention scheme.
  • Carry out emergency procedures, evacuations and exercises when required.
  • Ensure messages concerning safety and injury prevention are properly communicated to all concerned.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy workplace and maintain environmental management processes.
  • Co-operate with the Company to enable legal obligations relating to health, safety, fatigue, risk and environment are met: Example – adhering to meal break times, correct use of PPE, housekeeping, COSHH, etc.
  • Report all injuries, hazards or near misses to your Team Leader or Manager and endorse at least all initial documentation required before the end of your turn of duty.
