About the job As a Multi Skilled Engineer, you will work on GWR Fleet units and some third-party vehicles. Safety, teamwork, and following clear instructions are very important. Jobs are explained step-by-step according to Train Vehicle Maintenance Instructions, so you always know what to do.

Your Tasks:

  • Perform Safety Critical and Non-Safety Critical tasks according to your skills and training for different types of traction.
  • Complete maintenance examinations to make sure vehicles are safe and working correctly.
  • Replace components when required to keep vehicles running.
  • Carry out general depot duties, like housekeeping, organising tools, or helping others.
  • Carry out mechanical and electrical diagnostic and maintenance work, including:
  • Finding and fixing faults
  • Reporting defects clearly
  • Responding to unexpected failures on the railway line when needed.
  • Make sure vehicles are safe to move after work, including performing “Safety of Line” checks as required.
  • Carry out overnight servicing tasks as instructed.
  • Your Work Environment You will be part of a structured and supportive team. Clear instructions are given in written, visual, and verbal formats. Routines are predictable to help reduce stress and make work reliable.

    Support and Guidance Mentors and supervisors are available if and when you need help. Tasks are explained step-by-step, and you can ask questions if unsure.

    What Is Expected From You:

    • Safety always comes first. Speak up if you see or hear anything that isn’t safe.
    • Follow structured instructions and work with the team. No question is too small.
    • Regular colleague check-ins with your line manager. Your time to give us feedback.
    • Able to work rosters which include days and nights.

    Minimum requirements NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) or time served Apprenticeship in an Electrical or Mechanical discipline (ideally both given the multi competence requirement).

    Additional Information This would be an excellent opportunity for a colleague to gain experience of working on Various Fleet Types including HST, 150s, Class 802, Voyagers and Class 08.
