Job summary

Staff Nurse – Band 5

Full current UK professional registration and working within a UK NHS Trust is essential when applying. All applicants who do not fit this criteria will not be eligible for shortlisting and will be dismissed from the process. Do not apply if the process of UK registration/visa is not complete. The post holder will be responsible for delivering high quality care to patients with orthopaedic problems or fractures within the acute hospital outpatient setting, including assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of evidence-based individualized patient care within the boundaries of the role. The post holder will contribute to the continuing development of standards of care, nursing standards and monitoring of outcomes, and is expected to continue with professional development. Note: if you are a student qualifying in Spring 2025, we have concluded our Newly-Qualified Nursing campaign and are unable to accept any additional applications at this time.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide excellent, evidence-based patient care within the Treatment Room, Plaster Room and outpatient clinic setting. An interest in tissue viability and wound care would be useful. The post holder will provide support and act as a knowledge base for Health Care Support workers, student Nurses and Band 4 Nurse Associates. High standards of record keeping are expected, including photography of wounds. The post holder will be able to run a Fracture Clinic, preparing patients for examination by removing dressings, plaster casts and splints, and act as a patient advocate when necessary. The post holder will liaise with the MDT within the department and the wider community.

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate compassionate nursing care to meet the patient\’s individualised needs.
  • Ensure the highest standards of care and safety are maintained.
  • Support the nurse in charge with day-to-day planning, delivery of a high quality nursing service and ongoing improvement.
  • Ensure effective communication of sensitive information regarding patient assessments and clinical details.
  • Act as a role model, maintaining high quality, professional standards at all times.
  • Document observations, assessments, results, decisions and actions in patient records and communicate these to the multidisciplinary team and, where appropriate, to carers.
  • Provide legible, comprehensive patient records to Trust and NMC standards and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication links with all levels of staff within the Trust and with external agencies.
  • Participate in the audit cycle of clinical practices and procedures, including infection prevention and control initiatives.
  • Assist in monitoring and protecting vulnerable groups and individuals.
  • Promote and maintain patient dignity and privacy at all times.
  • Participate in research, service modernisation, clinical governance and National Service Frameworks as appropriate.
  • Develop and sustain own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness, maintaining a professional portfolio with evidence of reflective practice.
  • Encourage service users and carers to provide feedback and work with the outpatient team to develop action plans to address issues.
  • Promote best practice and monitor the practice of support workers.
  • Assist in orienting and supporting new staff and students to the unit, working as part of the team.
  • Act as a role model and promote the Trust\’s STAR values.

Qualifications

Essential

  • First Level Registered Nurse
  • Current live registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable

  • Qualification or experience in teaching and assessing.
  • Teaching/Assessor Qualification (e.g., ENB 998 or equivalent).
  • Leadership qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant clinical and management experience as a Band 5 Staff Nurse in elective surgery or anaesthetics.
  • Ability to organise work for a caseload of patients and prioritise clinical care needs.
  • Nursing patients in an elective clinical setting.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of Pre-Assessment clinics.
  • Previous theatre or outpatient experience.
  • Working knowledge of computers.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to supervise unregistered staff and students.
  • Understanding of nursing standards and audit.
  • Understanding of the principles and benefits of Pre-Assessment.

Desirable

  • Interest in undertaking research and audit.
  • Willingness to undertake physical assessment and clinical reasoning course.
