The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have an exciting opportunity for Neonatal/General Paediatric Consultants to come and join our dynamic and enthusiastic team at GWH! This role will predominantly be focused on Neonatology but also includes some General Paediatric commitments, including General Paediatric/Neonatal clinics and Paediatric Assessment Unit work, with the opportunity to develop other speciality interest areas.

There are 2 x full time 10PA Substantive positions but candidates wishing to be considered to be less than full time are encouraged to apply. There is also 1x 8PA Locum Consultant position – and those wishing to work greater hours then this are also encouraged to apply as there may be flexibility to allow this.

The 2 full time substantive positions are new roles within the Neonatal team, as part of a wider expansion of the consultant workforce to allow dedicated separate Neonatal service provision. The appointed candidate(s) will join an existing team of senior medical staff including Consultants. The 1 locum position is also part of the Neonatal team and is for 1 year.

Main duties of the job

On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly perinatal team who are passionate about delivering a high quality perinatal service to our local population.

It is vital that new members of the team share this vision and help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients and their families. As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues and an expanding team of dynamic advanced neonatal nurse practitioners.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

The post holder is required to hold a CCT or equivalent. As such the post holder should be trained in all aspects of general paediatrics and neonatology. A special interest (SPIN) in Neonatology is desirable, but we would also welcome applicants from candidates who can demonstrate significant experience and interest in Neonatology. Any other special interests will be discussed as to how they may fit into the department and will be supported as much as possible.

The service commitment will be on a consultant of the week model, with responsibilities for the neonatal unit, and also a separate service week as postnatal ward/transitional care consultant. There will also be a regular commitment to GP advice & guidance and referral triage.

Participation in out of hours consultant cover for the neonatal unit is on a rota (1:8 weekdays, 1:8 weekends). On-call responsibilities will involve multidisciplinary team working across the perinatal service.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support). There is also a 1:16 commitment to Paediatric Assessment Unit Consultant cover. There will also be a commitment to neonatal and general paediatric (and subspecialty) outpatient clinics.

There is no on-site PICU but patients are stabilised in the ED or on the adult ICU whilst awaiting retrieval with support from the anaesthetic department. Where the patient is a critically unwell baby (as a guide, under 3 months of age), the neonatal team will provide critical care skills and support for stabilisation prior to retrieval by the regional Paediatric Intensive Care WATCh team.

Undertaking ward rounds around the neonatal unit and transitional care unit daily, aiming, where possible, for these ward rounds to be done in partnership with the baby(ies) parents.

All consultants are willing to support new members of the team and a mentor within the department will be allocated.

Multidisciplinary team working is a key component of working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues including our nursing, midwifery, obstetric, ANNP and AHP teams.

Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.

Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.

Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.

Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education. Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The post holder will participate in an out of hours consultant rota, detailed within the job plan section.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC
  • CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants of equivalent status), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the specialty appropriate for this consultant post at the time of taking up the consultant appointment. Alternatively, candidates can hold or be within 6 months of their CCT at interview.
  • MRCPCH(UK) or equivalent
  • EPALS/APLS provider or equivalent
  • NLS provider or equivalent
  • SPIN module in Neonatal medicine
  • Level 3 Safeguarding training

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
  • Expertise in full range of Paediatric and Neonatal conditions
  • Experience in neonatology and competent to manage neonates at all gestations including stabilisation of the smallest babies prior to transfer to a tertiary unit.
  • Ability to lead a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Sub-speciality interests will be supported (particular extra subspeciality interests that would be desirable include respiratory, cardiology and neurology)

  • ARNI provider or Instructor
  • NLS Instructor
  • Research and/or Quality improvement experience
  • Patient safety / governance experience
