Senior Medical Equipment Service Technician (Mechanical Engineering)

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineering Technician to fill a vacancy within the Mechanical Workshop of the Department. You will join an enthusiastic department that provides a Medical Equipment Management service for the Trust. The post involves working closely with other healthcare professionals, in providing corrective/planned maintenance on a wide range of equipment including beds and suction and flow meters. In addition, the Mechanical Engineering Technician works closely with teams within the Trust to design bespoke items to support patients. Our department works to a registered quality assurance system (BS EN ISO 9001:2015) to give a high standard of customer care.

You should be qualified to degree level or equivalent in an engineering/science discipline or have an equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience/vocational training. This post is offered as Band 6 with recruitment at Band 5 and progression to the Band 6 following completion of required competencies and skills. An expected 12 month period at Band 5 before progression to Band 6. Good opportunities for personal development are available, and training is provided for specific equipment.

Main duties of the job:

• You will be part of the team managing the Trust’s large stock of medical equipment.
• The specialties covered include imaging equipment, pathology laboratory equipment, patient beds and cots, Medical Gas regulators and flowmeters as well as the full range of patient related monitoring and therapeutic equipment found in the Trust’s wards, intensive cares and theatres.
• Your main tasks are to maintain the equipment in all parts of the hospital, carry out planned preventative maintenance and to test and calibrate the medical equipment.
• You will work unsupervised, and exercise the initiative and responsibility required to maintain complex systems and equipment in the optimum functional state.
• You will need to exhibit a "can do" attitude and be flexible in your attitude to work.
• You will advise and help the other members of the department as necessary.

To provide specialised clinical technical services for preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection and repair to a wide range of complex and patient‑critical medical equipment. To work in close co-operation with clinical staff to meet planned preventative maintenance and servicing of the medical equipment.

Trust Values Essential criteria:

• Trust Values Science, Biomedical Engineering, electronics degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
• Specific specialist training in the use and maintenance of a range of medical equipment.
• Specialist training in the use of machine shop tools and equipment.
• Qualification in Electrical installation.
• Eligible for and working towards RCT membership.

Experience/Knowledge Essential criteria:

• Advanced knowledge of mechanical workshop practice and all aspects of mechanical engineering.
• Specialised knowledge of medical, electro‑mechanical systems, computing and medical device support.
• Broad knowledge of medical device operation and management.
• Experience in the use of CNC machines.
• General knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering and computer systems.
• Experience in applying workshop technology to patient‑critical equipment and techniques in healthcare.
• Practical experience in medical engineering workshop practices and techniques, including preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and procurement.
• Experience of working in a hospital or similar environment, experience of working in patient areas.
• Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: Ionising radiation, Electricity, Medium voltages, EHT, Medium currents, Cross‑infection, Bio‑hazards, Workshop hazards, Fumes, Solvents, Tools at elevated temperatures, Compressed medical gases, Cleaning agents and other hazardous materials used within the EME Workshop, Lifting heavy sensitive items of equipment.

Skills/Abilities Essential criteria:

• Use an equipment management database to maintain asset register and record work done.
• Use of fine tools for equipment adjustment/assembly.
• Able to use all machine shop tools to a very high standard of workmanship.
• Able to concentrate frequently when subject to unpredictable working patterns such as interruptions from users needing urgent attention.
• Good communication skills.
• Able to prioritise and manage own work.
• Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence.
