We have an exciting opportunity for someone to develop their teaching and renal nursing skills on Eagle Ward in the role of Band 6 Practice Facilitator! Eagle Ward, the largest paediatric renal unit in the UK, is currently recruiting this role to join our friendly and welcoming team. Eagle Ward currently comprises of 14 inpatient beds and an ambulatory Haemodialysis unit, both areas provide specialist care to Neonates, Infants, Children and Adolescents.

This post is predominantly based on Eagle Acute Ward to provide essential education and teaching to ensure staff are trained and competent in all aspects of Renal nursing care. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing training and support for Newly Qualified Nurses and advancing the renal and dialysis skills of already trained nurses on the unit. They will work closely with our Practice Educators and Practice Facilitator for Haemodialysis.

Eagle Ward as a whole provides nursing staff with the chance to develop and enhance essential high dependency skills, management of critical blood pressure anomalies and fluid balance disturbances as well as the development of complex dialysis and transplantation skills. We have established a robust educational programme including comprehensive specialist workbooks, a renal foundation course and a degree and masters module that enable you to continually develop both your theoretical and practical knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job:

  • To be clinical expert within the speciality.
  • To act as role model and maintain high standards of practice.
  • To work alongside nursing staff, promoting evidence based, best practice nursing care for children and their families.
  • To develop, maintain and share appropriate and relevant knowledge and clinical skills which ensures that patient care is evidence based and best practices are encouraged and supported.
  • Contribute to an environment in which effective practice is fostered, implemented, evaluated, and disseminated.
  • To be proficient in the clinical skill set required for the relevant clinical area within Eagle Ward.

Whilst non-exhaustive, the predominant required skill sets are as follows:

  • Proficient skills in Renal Nursing and HDU Care.
  • Proficient in Peritoneal Dialysis - both chronic and advanced competencies.
  • A good understanding of the available protocols and how to access/find information.
  • Undertake extended IV therapy roles (ie Alteplase).
  • A good understanding of your specialty’s clinical needs and patient requirements.
  • A good understanding of your specialty’s patient emergencies.
  • Psychosocial issues surrounding family support.
  • Staff support requirements.

Person specification:

  • NMC Registered Nurse - relevant to area of practice Nephrology and Haemodialysis.
  • Relevant nursing qualification.
  • Evidence of on-going continuing professional development within Nephrology/Haemodialysis speciality linked to demonstrable clinical competencies and level 6 academic study within the speciality.
  • Assessor or practice supervisor qualification/experience.
  • Leadership or Management Training.
