Panther Urology Ward is seeking an experienced staff nurse who is keen to explore and develop their career on a paediatric urology surgical ward to cover maternity leave for 10 months.

Main duties of the job:
  • Panther Urology ward has 11 inpatient beds (2 of which are High Dependency). Patients having various surgical procedures requiring different aspects of nursing care, offering you the opportunity to gain new clinical skills caring for acutely unwell children and to provide the highest standard of nursing care for the children, young people and their families at all times.
  • To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual children and to supervise other staff in this activity.
  • To ensure an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the children, young people and their families.
  • To supervise and support members of the ward team as required, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate care.
  • To actively assist in the education and practical training of learners and junior staff at every opportunity.
  • To work in co-operation with their university in order to provide uniformity and promotion of professional standards.
  • To participate in informal and formal teaching.
  • To maintain confidentiality always surrounding the child’s or young person’s admission and treatment.

Essential criteria:
  • Experience of working as part of a diverse team.
  • Experience of contributing to an inclusive workplace culture.
  • NMC Child Registered Nurse.
  • Relevant nursing qualification.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies.
Desirable criteria:
  • Assessor or practice supervisor qualification/experience.
  • Experience of having worked with acute/chronically sick children or specialised transferable skills.
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing.
  • Understanding of the importance of research and evidence-based practice.
  • Basic knowledge of computer skills.
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues according to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance (risk management, audit, quality).
Skills / Abilities:
  • Ability to plan and prioritise care for patients.
  • Committed to family centred care.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent numeracy skills.
  • Good time management and teaching skills.
