Are you looking to join a friendly and highly skilled team that is dedicated to providing the highest levels of care for children and young people? Do you wish to advance in a rewarding specialism that offers cutting-edge technologies? We are looking for NMC-registered nurses to join Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to work in their well-established team within the Heart and Lung Directorate. This is an exciting time at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Cardiac Nursing. We are expanding our service and need your help. Cardiac services are embarking on an exciting programme of change in order to meet the challenges of providing a world leading cardiac programme. Over the next 2 years we are expanding the service to open a 16 bedded high dependency Unit. This will help children needing cardiac surgery to be nursed in the right place at the right time allowing for timely discharges. You can help be part of this change.

Bear and Alligator ward are two areas consisting of 24 beds (inclusive of 8 HDU beds) that specialise in Cardiothoracic patients involving the heart, lungs and tracheal. Great Ormond Street Hospital is the UK centre for Paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension, providing specialist care for patients up to 18 years old. The typical cases that present on the ward are those patients who require CPAP, optiflow, chest drains, inotropes, TPN, blood transfusions and pacemakers. We also manage patients pre and post heart/lung transplant.

Main duties of the job

You will work across both Alligator and Bear ward - the cardiac wards. Alligator ward is a cardiac ward which focuses on Level 1/2 patients ensuring timely discharges and parental teaching. Bear ward is a fast pace cardiac ward with 8 high dependency beds and 12 ward level beds. Cardiac is a fast-paced environment which requires you to be flexible and adaptable to different situations. As an experienced staff nurse you will work as a skilled member of the nursing team, to deliver evidence based, high quality care to our patients and their families.

  • Ability to promote family centred care and establish good relationships with children, young people, and their families.
  • To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To be able to take charge of the ward in the absence of senior nursing staff following achievement of required competence.
  • To promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence-based practice.
  • To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion in Practice.

Do you want to:

  • Build new skills?
  • Embrace technology and innovation to enhance patient care?
  • Gain new clinical skills – chest drain management, optiflow, cpap?
  • Work with a supportive nursing and multi-disciplinary team?
  • Flexible working patterns to enhance your work life balance?
