We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist trainee skilled at working with children in visual electrophysiogy.

What we can offer:
We offer a preceptorship for a trainee who has completed the 3 yr training programme. You will help the multiprofessional clinical vision science team provide specialist visual electrophysiology services for children with complex conditions. They will also support ocular imaging and eye movement services when needed. These outpatient services are based in Ophthalmology.

The Ophthalmology department offers many learning and development opportunities. You will have opportunity to contribute to, and participate in, departmental teaching, case presentations, audit and ongoing clinical research activities.

What we are looking for/who we are looking to recruit:
We are looking for a person with experience and skills in clinical visual electrophysiology and personal qualities needed to work with children. This person will be able to work well and closely in a team and will be interested in active learning.

Main duties of the job

• To apply the principles and values of 'Good Scientific Practice'
• To deliver a comprehensive range of specialised ophthalmic vision science tests for paediatric patients with ophthalmological and systemic conditions of varying complexity
• To ensure that service quality standards and policies are upheld and to contribute to their continued development and improvement, informing IQIP updates
• To be professionally responsible for all aspects of your own work
• To make, maintain and keep updated comprehensive, accurate data records which meet Departmental, Trust and Professional standards
• To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools and empathic and sensitive communication with people with complex communication difficulties and/ or challenging behaviours; such as dysphasia, deafness and autistic spectrum disorders; speak English as a second language; or who have difficulty accepting their diagnosis
• To work closely with other members of the team in often restricted spaces, including bending, leaning over and some lifting and patient movement under stressful and at times unpleasant circumstances with exposure to smells, bodily fluids and transmittable disease, (such as head lice) and following appropriate infection control procedures during clinical episodes such as PPE for AGP when children require suction
• To show empathic professionalism when dealing with frequent emotionally distressing situations involving young patients and their carers

• MSc Ophthalmic and Vision Science
• Eligible for HCPC registration having completed the STP programme of training
• Evidence of significant clinical experience in conducting and analysing specialist visual electrophysiology tests and ophthalmic imaging

Experience/Knowledge

• Clinical experience of performing specialised visual electrophysiology including analysis, factual report writing and fault finding.
• Clinical experience of working with children and families.
• To demonstrate an ongoing interest in ophthalmic and vision science, and visual electrophysiology including keeping up to date with current literature
• Knowledge of the international standards for visual electrophysiology tests and the relevance to clinical practice
• Knowledge of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency and Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics. Knowledge of the principles of Good Scientific Practice.
• Knowledge of the Patients Charter

Skills/Abilities

• Demonstrate the ability to handle difficult situations calmly and effectively and to deal with patients tactfully, efficiently and with empathy
• To be able to accurately enter factual clinical findings onto a computerized database or document.
• To be able to recognise abnormal imaging findings and investigate and/or elevate as necessary.
• To be able to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team or independently as a clinical practitioner. To demonstrate the ability to develop good working relationships with hospital staff at all levels.
• To be able to work under pressure in a busy environment
• To provide clinical guidance to less experienced staff and students
• To demonstrate good presentation skills for formal and informal teaching including clinical audit
• To be able to undertake clinical audit within OVS
