About the Role
Great British Energy is looking for a Head of Risk to join our GBE Central Finance Team. This role will play a key part in contributing to projects, objectives, and wider organisational goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management framework aligned with GBE’s mandate and investment strategy.
- Lead the identification, assessment and management of risks arising from GBE’s investment and financing activity, including equity investments, loans, grants and hybrid instruments.
- Own and operate the transaction risk assessment framework, ensuring consistent evaluation of financial, commercial, legal and delivery risks across all deals.
- Work with deal teams to ensure appropriate risk mitigations are built into transaction structures.
- Working with the delivery units, identify where external due diligence is required and ensure that it is appropriately scoped.
- Lead assessment and monitoring of financial risks across GBE’s portfolio, including credit, market, liquidity, and counterparty exposures.
- Advising the investment team & committee in determining appropriate return rates for investments.
- Work closely with Finance colleagues to ensure risk assessments are aligned with financial models, accounting treatments and funding constraints.
- Design, implement and maintain GBE’s risk management framework, aligned with HM Treasury’s Orange Book. Embed a risk-aware culture into the organisation and ensure appropriate reporting to Audit Committee and Board.
- Lead the articulation and embedding of risk appetite, and ensure that transactions and operational activities are in line with agreed risk tolerances.
- Establish and continuously improve risk policies, systems, and analytics capabilities.
- Promote a risk-aware culture and build a high-performing risk team with strong collaboration across business units.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Significant senior‑level experience in risk management, with a strong emphasis on financial transactions, investments and project finance.
- Deep understanding of financial, commercial and counterparty risk.
- Experience operating in a high‑governance, committee‑driven environment.
- Ability to communicate complex risk issues clearly to senior executives and boards.
- Strong judgement and independence, with proven ability to provide constructive challenge.
Desirable:
- Experience in energy, infrastructure, investment or public‑sector financing.
- Familiarity with HM Treasury frameworks.
- Experience working alongside finance, legal and investment teams on live transactions.
- Professional qualification in risk, finance or a related discipline.
