Great British Energy is looking to recruit an Investment Portfolio Officer to be based in either Aberdeen or Edinburgh.

The Investment Portfolio Officer (Valuations) will support the effective operation of Great British Energy's ("GBE's") Investment Portfolio Management function, with a particular focus on valuation analysis, valuation governance and portfolio financial reporting.

The role will help ensure that GBE's investment valuations are timely, well-evidenced, consistently prepared and capable of supporting senior decision-making, financial reporting, portfolio oversight and relevant governance approvals.

The postholder will work closely with Investment Portfolio Management, Transaction Support, Finance, Risk, Legal, Strategy and investment vertical teams to gather valuation inputs, maintain valuation records, support valuation reviews and help explain movements in investment value across GBE's portfolio.

The role will include broader portfolio management responsibilities, including supporting post-close monitoring, portfolio reporting, issue escalation and follow-up actions where these are linked to valuation, performance, risk, impairment, re-rating, intervention or exit considerations.

The postholder will contribute to building a robust, scalable and auditable valuations capability within GBE's portfolio office as the organisation's investment activity grows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the coordination of valuation inputs across the portfolio, working with investment teams, Finance, Risk, Transaction Support and external advisers where required.
  • Support annual, semi-annual and ad hoc valuation processes for GBE investments, ensuring valuation outputs are evidence-based, documented and capable of review.
  • Prepare valuation analysis and supporting materials for governance forums, including explanations of valuation movements, key assumptions, sensitivities, impairments, write-offs and changes in valuation basis.
  • Maintain valuation records, assumptions logs, source data, audit trails and version control to support transparency, financial reporting and future portfolio reviews.
  • Support internal valuation analysis before external valuation opinions are commissioned, including reviewing base case assumptions, downside cases, comparables, cash flow forecasts and key value drivers.
  • Support the development of valuation templates, guidance, reporting packs and controls that can be applied consistently across GBE's portfolio.
  • Support the monitoring of the performance of GBE's individual investments and the wider portfolio against the investment case approved, conditions of GBE's finance, agreed milestones, GBE's objectives, the risks to the investment's performance, and expected financial and strategic outcomes from the investments.
  • Maintain portfolio records, trackers, action logs, reporting packs and governance documentation to support effective portfolio oversight and auditability.
  • Provide portfolio input to investment opportunities being considered, including portfolio risk implications, monitoring, and governance requirements.
  • Act as Board Observer in GBE investees, ensuring that there is effective reporting of relevant investee board-level information into GBE's understanding of the risks in each investee and identifying emerging issues and risks to GBE's investment.
  • Help identify emerging issues, patterns and exceptions across the portfolio, including underperformance, delivery risks, concentration issues or cross-cutting dependencies, and elevate these appropriately.
  • Support follow-up actions on investments that are off track, including enhanced monitoring, remedial actions and preparation of materials for escalation through GBE's intervention channels where required.

This includes support and, where required, leading portfolio actions including restructurings, follow-on investments, and exits.

  • Assist in maintaining high-quality records and information flows to support a clear decision trail, knowledge transfer, lessons learned and continuous improvement across the portfolio management function.
  • Build effective working relationships across GBE and support ad hoc analysis or deep dives on portfolio themes, pipeline prioritisation and performance issues as required.
  • Develop and maintain a focused understanding of valuation drivers across GBE's investment portfolio, including financial performance, cash flows, valuation assumptions, market benchmarks, risk rating changes, impairment indicators, project milestones, route-to-market assumptions and governance matters.
  • Coordinate with relevant GBE investment verticals, Transaction Support, Finance, Risk and Legal to identify valuation-relevant issues, including changes in forecast cash flows, delivery risk, market assumptions, counterparty risk, underperformance, cost overruns, delay, covenant matters, impairment indicators or proposed interventions.
  • Support reporting on portfolio valuation, valuation movements, unrealised gains and losses, impairments, revaluations, write-offs, exposure, performance, interventions, exits and lessons learned for GBE's Investment Committee, Executive Investment Forum and senior stakeholders.
