Great British Energy - Nuclear is an arm's length body of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear technologies in Great Britain. We play a crucial role in advancing nuclear new build, ensuring the UK's energy security and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Great British Energy - Nuclear focuses on fostering innovation, facilitating investment, and coordinating efforts across the nuclear industry to build a resilient and sustainable energy future. One of the core aims for the SMR programme is to establish the technology as an investible asset in the UK. The Head of Programme Investment & Financing plays a strategic role in securing private sector funding into SMRs. This position leads the development of funding strategies, financial modelling, risk mitigation, and overall financial oversight to ensure viable and cost-effective financing to support UK SMR development at VfM.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
- Possess an in-depth understanding of project finance structures, funding sources (debt, equity, grants, etc.), and financial modelling techniques relevant to large-scale capital projects, particularly within the nuclear sector.
- Demonstrate a strong grasp of financial regulations, tax considerations, and the regulatory frameworks governing nuclear project development.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the energy markets, financing trends, and the key players (lenders, investors, government agencies) involved in funding major infrastructure projects.
- Develop comprehensive project funding strategies, outlining financing structures, potential funding sources, risk mitigation plans, and long-term financial projections.
- Conduct financial feasibility studies, due diligence assessments, and complex financial modelling to evaluate project viability and support funding decisions.
- Build relationships with key governmental stakeholders including DESNZ, NWF and Ofgem.
- Negotiate with lenders, investors and other capital providers, securing optimal financing terms and conditions for projects.
- Collaborate with legal and technical teams to structure project contracts, ensuring alignment with financial objectives and risk mitigation strategies.
- Manage a team of project finance specialists, fostering professional growth and ensuring the efficient execution of funding activities.
- Proactively identify and manage financial risks, developing contingency plans and mitigation strategies to protect project viability.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
- Demonstrated success in securing funding for large-scale capital projects, with a proven track record of complex financial negotiations.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage a team, build strategic partnerships both internally within GBE-N and externally, and influence key decision-makers.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and financial modelling skills.
- Proven track record of successful project finance transactions, ideally with experience in the nuclear industry or another sector with long development cycles and complex financing structures.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field or Equivalent.
