Autism Support Worker in Worcester

Gray Healthcare are recruiting Support Workers, within the Worcester area of Worcestershire, to support a Male who has a diagnosis of Autism and Learning disability .

The person we support lives independently in their own home receiving 2-2-1 support 24 hours a day.

The person we support is supported by a mixed team of male and female on mixed shifts of days, waking nights and sleeps.

The person we support enjoys interacting with his staff team by doing activities with them in the community and enjoys watching his favourite tv shows.

We are recruiting drivers only for this role as the individual we support will have a mobility vehicle to access the community .

Support Worker Required Skills and Experience

• Full UK Driving License – Essential.




• Social care experience, ideally within Autism and Learning Disabilities and with some experience of supporting individuals with mental health needs such as anxiety .




• Experience supporting individuals with behaviours perceived as challenging.




• Experience implementing detailed care plans and risk assessments.




• Experience adapting communication skills, verbal and non-verbal, to aid understanding of the supported individual .




• Motivated to promote engagement in meaningful activity




• A desire to support the individual in their cultural and spiritual needs




• Good literacy and numeracy skills




• You must have current Right to Work in the UK and have been employed in the UK for at least 6 months. We no longer have any certificates of sponsorship available and are unable to consider sponsorship.




• This position is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references

Working Hours

24 hour contract 2 x 12 hour days shifts from 8am to 8pm

Induction and Training

We provide an initial week of training which is a combination of online training. (Company induction, systems, and Medication.) Followed by in-person training on PROACT-SCIPr-UK which is a PBS approach to least restrictive practice, this is a therapeutic and proven alternative to restraint dominant approaches . You will then complete the person-centred training, specific to the person that you are supporting . Training continues throughout your time with Gray Healthcare, and we encourage you to develop and grow your career with us.

When I arrived at the hospital, I had to reverse the car and park as close to the entrance as possible because this gentleman was so frightened to walk the short distance to the car park. This anxiety was the result of being bullied all his life because of his learning disability. It was genuinely heartbreakingly to see!

When he first came to us at Gray Healthcare he was low in mood and had no motivation whatsoever. Every time we suggested an outing, he would think of a reason not to leave the house. Every day followed the same pattern, and at times it did feel that we might never make a positive difference to his life.My best day out has to be the first time we took a day trip to York.

‘Am I allowed two best days? To provide a bit of context, the gentleman we support moved out of hospital where he had been living for five years into his own home at the beginning March 2020. This was literally just a matter of weeks before the first COVID-19 lockdown. So, it was a real shame that, after a few weeks of going out, pursuing new activities and really enjoying himself, he found himself unable to go out at all. Because of his health, he was considered ‘high risk’ of getting seriously ill from COVID-19, so he had to take more precautions than the general population all the way through the pandemic. At this time his only way of communicating…

To most people, my best day might sound a bit ordinary but for me, it was a day that signified just how much progress the lady I’m supporting has made since living in her own home with our support.. The lady I support prefers to stay in her local area as unfamiliar, crowded places can make her feel anxious and scared.

When the team first met him, he would not speak, would hardly leave the house, found it difficult to build relationships with people and would not get involved in new activities.He did not like to be seen or heard by others and would not leave any finger or foot prints behind.
