This position plays a key role in Phase 1 of the project, which is focused on discovery, analysis, and strategic planning with the eventual goal of removing upwards of 10% of all legacy debt. This initial phase will lay the foundation for subsequent phases of the project by identifying quick wins, designing long-term solutions, and supporting systems modernisation.
The Infrastructure Engineer will collaborate closely with the Technical Architect to assess and upgrade legacy infrastructure across the organisation's core IT estate, including but not limited to servers, networking components and the ServiceNow platform. A significant component of the role involves understanding and working with legacy Windows infrastructure, including systems as old as Windows 2003, and contributing to the creation of robust technical documentation throughout the project.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Technical Architect in identifying technical debt and upgrade opportunities across core infrastructure.
- Audit existing infrastructure, particularly legacy systems, and contribute to the development of a modernisation strategy alongside Technical Architect & Head of Architecture.
- Analyze and document existing services and configurations both at and above the OS level.
- Assist in delivering quick win improvements to infrastructure and contribute to the design of longer-term upgrades.
- Create and maintain detailed technical documentation to support current and future engineering work.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Strong knowledge of legacy Windows infrastructure systems, including Windows Server 2003, and the ability to analyze and evaluate system components at and slightly above OS level.
- Proven track record of supporting infrastructure improvement projects in collaboration with technical architects and cross-functional teams.
- Solid understanding of core IT infrastructure including servers, networks and systems.
- Demonstrable experience in documenting infrastructure setups and proposed changes accurately and clearly.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Familiarity with both legacy and modern technology stacks.
- Experience in managing or reducing technical debt in previous role.
- Understanding of infrastructure security principles and security software products.
- Charity or public sector experience, especially within agile or small project teams, is advantageous.
