What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Expert knowledge and extensive experience of open-source technologies like Java or JavaScript and Node.js.
- Experience of leading multiple teams and driving changes in technology whilst fostering a supportive development and collaborative culture alongside other roles and disciplines.
- Expert and extensive knowledge and experience of developing on cloud-based environments such as AWS and Azure.
- Knowledge and experience of SQL and noSQL database applications such as Postgres, MySQL, and MongoDB.
- Skills to build a robust automated test suite supporting a continuous deployment environment.
- Knowledge and experience of APIs, RESTful services, and Microservice Architectures.
You and your role
As a Lead Software Engineer, you will be an expert in your field and a role model in software craft. We're looking for people with proven experience in designing, developing, and supporting software products. You will enable multiple teams, driving consistency, standards, pace, and quality, resolving technical blockers, and promoting re-use and collaboration across the community. You will help define strategy and standards for our Engineering community and lead the adoption of best practices to deliver quality software products. You will also represent DWP and Engineering across the civil service and wider tech community. While capable of hands-on work, your primary focus will be leading and setting direction for engineers and teams.

- Location: Our digital hubs are in Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Sheffield—whichever is most convenient for you.
- Hybrid Working: We operate a hybrid model—part at home, part face-to-face in a hub.
- Pay: Up to £89,995.
- Pension: Civil service pension with employer contributions of 28.97%, up to £21,050 annually.
- Holidays: Starting at 25 days, rising to 31 days, plus up to 3 extra days off per month on flexi-time and public holidays.
