An exciting, substantive opportunity has arisen within the Postbridge Unit for a Band 3 Health Care Assistant. Postbridge Unit is a dedicated planned surgical admissions Unit & extended day case & overnight stay recovery Unit for a wide range of surgical procedures. The ward is staffed by an experienced and dedicated team of nurses and health care assistants caring for elective patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the delivery of care planned and assessed by the Registered Nurses.
- Carry out care and other duties under indirect supervision.
- Supervise junior health care assistants, contributing to training and development.
- Undertake specific extended skills and support care on a day-to-day basis for all patients in the clinical area under indirect supervision.
- Coordinate the flow of patients coming back from the various surgical recovery units and contribute to resource management.
- Manage own workload within the clinical area under indirect supervision.
- Carry out clinical observations, recognise and report changes in patient condition to senior staff.
- Support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts; report adverse findings to senior staff.
- Monitor skin integrity over pressure points and report findings to senior staff.
- Complete documentation for manual handling assessments as directed by registered staff.
- Provide health education and teaching to patients and carers; advise and refer where to access information.
- Document and sign for all observations and care with counter-signature from a registered practitioner.
- Support own professional development; attend courses and training to enhance practice.
- Participate in training and development of junior staff and act as a mentor to new HCAs and trainees.
- Promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, families and colleagues.
- Participate in development and implementation of ward policies and nursing strategies.
- Supervise and share responsibility for equipment maintenance and stock control on the ward.
- Adhere to data protection and Trust/Departmental policies; respect confidentiality.
- Report untoward incidents, complaints and clinical emergencies to senior staff.
- Following patient assessment by Registered Staff, undertake extended skills specific to individual competence under indirect supervision.
Qualifications & Experience
- Level 3 qualification or working towards Level 3, with recent experience of caring for patients in a clinical setting.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work calmly and methodically.
- Recent, up-to-date evidence of development.
