Applications are invited for the position of Healthcare Scientist Practitioner Apprenticeship within the Clinical & Radiation Physics Group of the Directorate of Healthcare Science & Technology at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The position is part of a three‑year training programme specialized in radiation physics and requires eligibility for entry onto a healthcare science practitioner apprenticeship (medical physics technology). Successful completion of the training programme may lead to a permanent role and registration on the relevant professional register (e.g. RCT/AHCS Practitioner register/HCPC).

The Clinical and Radiation Physics Group provides scientific and technical support services for diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation protection within the NHS, private and academic sectors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering aspects of the quality assurance programme and radiation protection services for radiology and nuclear medicine equipment.
  • Perform daily technical administration for occupational and environmental monitoring.
  • Issue and receipt of occupational and environmental monitors.
  • Liaise with the Approved Dosimetry Service.
  • Liaise with staff regarding new staff monitoring, non‑returns and resolve routine queries concerning occupational and environmental monitoring.
  • Participate in the delivery of the occupational and environmental monitoring service.
  • Organise calibration of radiation monitoring instruments including diagnostic, protection and contamination monitoring equipment and liaise with providers.
  • Assist in local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation.
  • Investigate and test faulty monitoring equipment and arrange repairs where necessary.
  • Perform regular checks on contamination monitoring equipment between calibrations.
  • Perform quality control measurements on a wide range of complex X‑ray and associated devices.
  • Analyse test results, produce reports of the findings and discuss them with other scientific staff.
  • Maintain records for Clinical Trial activities.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 GCSEs at Grades A*‑C or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
  • Minimum Level 2 numeracy and literacy (e.g. Grade C – 5 or higher in GCSE maths and English).
  • Level 3 qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS points (e.g. A‑level grades C/C/C, including at least one relevant STEM subject) or extensive (4 + year) demonstrable experience in a relevant setting.
  • Accepted Level 3 qualifications with extensive experience: A level – minimum 64 points (CC) with a STEM subject ≥32 points, BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science, BTEC National Extended Diploma (Grade MPP) with a STEM subject, or Access to Higher Education Diploma (≥45 credits at Level 3, at least 15 credits in STEM).

  • Good communication skills and ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to prioritise, manage and plan work for self.
  • Ability to work well within a busy environment and meet reasonable deadlines.
  • Ability to carry out accurate practical measurements.
  • Frequent requirement to concentrate.
  • Occasional requirement to lift and move equipment (moderate physical effort).
  • Ability to deal with occasional distressing circumstances.

Desirable:

  • Manual dexterity to accurately position test equipment.
