Overview

In this role you will contribute to Grant Thornton’s Public Sector Audit practice by delivering high‑quality external audits for local government, NHS and related bodies.

You’ll lead client discussions, maintain technical knowledge and supervise complex portfolios, while working within a supportive, flexible, and inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage audit engagements for large public sector clients
  • Discuss business challenges with clients and tailor audit approaches
  • Develop technical knowledge and lead valuable discussions with clients
  • Support and mentor junior staff; manage project timelines and resources
  • Maintain proficiency in UK GAAP/FRS102 and audit software
  • Contribute to delivering quality outputs and audit assurance
  • Engage with cross-functional teams (specialist public sector reporting, value for money, grants assurance)
  • Support flexible and hybrid working arrangements with client delivery in mind
  • Key requirements
  • Professional qualification (ACA, ICAS, CA, ACCA or CIPFA) with post‑qualification experience
  • Experience in managing a large portfolio of audit clients
  • Experience in auditing public sector bodies; handling complex technical matters
  • Project management experience
  • Experience with IFRS and auditing listed companies (beneficial)
  • Extensive use of audit software and Microsoft packages
  • Client-focused communications
