The Role
To lead and manage production teams in delivering efficient, safe, and high-quality bakery operations that consistently meet Grahams Bakery's standards for Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Productivity. The Supervisor will ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety regulations, and continuous improvement initiatives, fostering a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and team engagement.
Key Responsibilities and Outputs
- Delivering agreed production plan as designated by the Head of Production.
- Maintain Safety, Quality, Delivery and Productivity (SQDP) targets.
- Managing and motivating teams to achieve production targets.
- Manage team performance and training.
- Report production metrics and issues to management.
- Take ownership of issues assigned and work with the wider team to resolve and sustain.
Nature and scope of responsibilities
The role holder is responsible for:
- Production Leadership & Coordination
- Oversee all aspects of the production process to ensure smooth operations and achievement of daily production targets.
- Collaborate effectively with peer Supervisors and cross-functional teams to meet overall production goals and maintain workflow continuity across departments.
- Run Start of Shift meetings with Production Operatives to align on goals and expectations.
- Prepare and attend Daily Check-In meetings and Weekly Operations Meetings.
- Allocate work and supervise on-the-job activities to ensure effective coordination and output.
- Team Leadership & People Management
- Effectively manage people in line with equality and ethical standards, promoting a harmonious working environment and encouraging teamwork.
- Monitor staffing levels to meet operational requirements and achieve optimum efficiency.
- Support morale and motivation through clear communication, recognition, and development.
- Resolve conflicts and disputes in a fair and timely manner, providing guidance and support to employees.
- Foster a positive and respectful work environment that encourages open communication and minimises conflicts.
- Carry out operational people management activities including performance oversight and training support.
- Assist with training sign offs and update skills matrix for own area to encourage upskilling staff development.
- Help write SOPs work instructions for specific processes and procedures under supervision to ensure safety and quality standards are met.
- Support Recruitment activities as required.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Monitor working practices, processes, equipment, and environment to ensure health, safety, and well-being.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, food safety, hygiene standards, Safe Working Procedures (SWPs), and company policies.
- Conduct accident and near-miss investigations and complete reports accurately and promptly.
- Take appropriate action or seek advice to maintain a safe working environment.
- Must have or be working towards Food Safety Level 3.
- Quality Control & Assurance
- Maintain full awareness of product specifications and quality standards.
- Ensure the team understands and adheres to quality expectations.
- Communicate quality issues clearly and consistently to the team.
- Conduct spot checks and address quality concerns proactively.
- Oversee production staff cooperation with the QA team and escalate issues when necessary.
- Performance Improvement & SQDP
- Drive a Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Productivity (SQDP) mindset across the team.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.
- Raise ideas and suggestions for workplace improvements and support change initiatives.
- Work with key internal stakeholders to drive GMP performance and operational excellence.
- Operational Decision-Making
- Make timely and effective decisions using available information and seeking advice when needed.
- Use initiative to diagnose and resolve operating problems quickly and effectively.
- Demonstrate own root cause analysis identifying issues on performance or quality and implement corrective actions.
The role holder may from time to time be required to undertake reasonable additional or other duties as are necessary to meet the needs of the business.
Bakehouse Specific Responsibilities
- Oversee raw material preparation and baking processes, ensuring consistency in product quality, texture, and appearance.
- Monitor oven operations, including temperature control, baking times, and product flow.
- Ensure correct handling of raw materials, including flour, yeast, and other ingredients, in line with recipe specifications and allergen controls.
- Manage proofing and chilling stages, if required, ensuring optimal conditions for product development.
- Coordinate bake schedules to meet production targets and delivery timelines.
- Ensure compliance with cleaning schedules for bakehouse equipment (e.g., mixers, ovens, trays) to meet hygiene standards.
Decorating Specific Responsibilities
- Oversee the decorating process for all baked goods, ensuring consistency in presentation, portioning, and adherence to product specifications.
- Manage the preparation and handling of decorating materials, such as icings, glazes, fillings, toppings, and sprinkles.
- Ensure allergen control and hygiene standards are strictly followed during decorating activities.
- Coordinate decorating schedules to align with production flow and delivery timelines.
- Monitor staff technique and output, ensuring visual appeal and quality standards are met.
- Support innovation and seasonal product development, contributing ideas for new decorating styles and finishes.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of decorated products to maintain integrity and shelf life.
Wrapping & Dispatch Specific Responsibilities
- Supervise the wrapping process to ensure all products are packaged, sealed, and labelled accurately and hygienically, in line with customer specifications and food safety standards.
- Ensure wrapping materials are used efficiently, stored appropriately, and replenished as needed to support continuous operations.
- Coordinate with production and packing teams to align wrapping and dispatch schedules with output and delivery requirements.
- Oversee the dispatch process to ensure timely and accurate delivery of finished goods to customers and distribution points.
- Monitor vehicle loading, routing, and documentation to optimise delivery efficiency and reduce delays.
- Maintain accurate records for wrapping and dispatch activities, including batch traceability, delivery notes, and stock movements.
- Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and temperature control standards throughout wrapping, storage, and transport stages.
- Liaise with logistics providers and internal stakeholders to resolve issues and continuously improve dispatch performance.
- Conduct final checks to verify product integrity, wrapping quality, order accuracy, and documentation before release.
