General Practitioners act as the cornerstone of primary healthcare, providing comprehensive, continuous and personalised medical care to individuals and families within the community. Their main roles involve diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, promoting preventative health and coordinating patient care through referrals.

Main duties of the job:

  • A General Practitioner in Wales delivers community‑based primary care as the first point of contact for patients.
  • Key duties include conducting in‑person or telephone consultations, performing home visits when required, diagnosing conditions, prescribing treatment, managing chronic diseases and working within a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Clinical Care: Assess, diagnose and treat patients at the surgery or in their homes.
  • Preventive Health: Offer health education and promote prevention within the community.
  • Referrals: Refer patients to hospital specialists or other healthcare professionals when necessary.
  • Administration: Maintain accurate patient records, sign and manage electronic systems.
  • Teamwork: Work closely with practice staff, including nurses, pharmacists and administrative teams.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with Welsh health board policies, including GDPR and safeguarding.

Job summary:

  • Salary: Available upon request
  • Workload: 8 sessions a week. Monthly maternity cover, 12 months starting from 20 July 2026.

About us:

We are a BCU‑managed practice with 8,800 patients across two surgeries within the Holyhead locality. The team includes admin support, on‑site pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, advanced nurse practitioners, advanced paramedics, practice nurses, health care assistants and both salaried and locum GPs. In‑house services include an audiologist, mental health occupational therapist, family wellbeing practitioner and physiotherapist. We also have access to the Urgent Primary Care Centre. Our clinical system is EMIS and we use electronic prescribing.

Job responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team, sharing clinical knowledge and experience in a GP practice.
  • Manage patient caseloads and treat a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting.
  • Ensure awareness, compliance and execution of all relevant practice policies and guidelines, including prescribing, confidentiality, data protection and health and safety.
  • Communicate effectively and respect the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients, carers and colleagues, behaving in a welcoming and non‑judgemental manner that respects circumstances, feelings, priorities and rights.
  • The post holder will also undertake all normal duties of a GP working within primary care.

  • Qualifications: A qualified doctor with a Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) and completion of GP specialist training.
  • Registration: Full GMC registration and listed on the GP Register.
  • Licence: Licensed to practice and on the Welsh Practitioner List.
