The Healthcare Assistant will work as part of the multidisciplinary team within the General Practice setting, supporting the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centred care. The role involves carrying out a range of clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals, contributing to the smooth running of the practice and the wellbeing of our patient population.
HCAs play a key role in assisting patients with their health and wellbeing needs, undertaking tasks such as phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, urinalysis, vaccinations (if trained), Health Checks, wound care, and lifestyle advice. The post holder will also provide essential support to GPs, nurses, and other practice staff by ensuring clinical areas are prepared and maintained to high standards of infection prevention and control.

The HCA will be expected to:

- Maintain accurate, timely, and appropriate clinical records.

Princess Street Surgery serves a registered list of approximately 7,500 patients in Gorseinon and the surrounding area. We are a forward-thinking training practice, supporting GP Registrars and Foundation Pharmacists, and we are proud of our role in developing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Our clinical team comprises 4 GP Partners, 2 Salaried GPs, 2 Practice Nurses, a Pharmacist, and a Nurse Practitioner, supported by an experienced and dedicated administrative and reception team. Job responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
- Undertake new patient health checks
- Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education
- Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
- Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
- Carry out ECGs as requested
- Undertaking basic wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
- Carry out BMI checks as directed
- Act as a chaperone as required
- Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
- Provide support during minor operations as required
- When trained, administering B12 injections, flu, covid, pneumonia vaccination under patient Specific Directions
- Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
- Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
- Ensure clinical fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
- Recording and monitoring cold chain storage and reporting any abnormalities
- Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Saf safeguarding Adults and Saf safeguarding Children
- Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
- Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
- Support the administrative team on an as-required basis
- Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
- Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
- Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
- Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.
