What will you be doing?

School governors are responsible for the strategic management of a school, making decisions on various issues. Governing boards include representatives from the school, parents, local authority, and community.

The core responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring accountability
  • Acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the Head Teacher
  • Monitoring and evaluating school progress
  • Managing budgets
  • Planning and overseeing school improvement initiatives
  • Setting school aims and values
  • Appointing senior staff, including the Head Teacher
  • Participating in committees focused on areas like finance or pupil achievement, which meet separately from the main board and report back in full meetings
