Responsible for supervising and participating in the work of a small crew of employees engaged in the maintenance, repair, overhaul of automobiles, trucks, specialized construction and maintenance equipment, and other automotive and/or related motorized equipment including accessories and appurtenances.Work is performed with some independence in accordance with accepted trade practices adapted to municipal requirements under the general direction of a supervisor of higher grade who reviews work through inspections for conformance to established departmental standards.Work instructions may be oral or written and are accompanied by drawings and sketches when necessary.No supervision is exercised over other workers.
Essential Functions
- Participates in maintaining, repairing, and overhauling passenger vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, compressors, snowloaders, sprayers, graders, sweepers, log loaders, rollers, mowing equipment, payloaders, flushers, asphalt distributors, power shovels and other specialized municipal construction and maintenance equipment, including accessories and appurtenances.
- Participates in testing, overhauling gasoline and diesel-powered motors.Faces, grinds, and seats valves.Sets tappets and rods.Cleans, installs rings and inserts.Replaces pistons and bearings.
- Participates in repairing, adjusting, replacing brakes, transmission, rear ends, differentials, clutches, axels, cooling systems, shock absorbers, steering boxes, posts, tie rod ends, gears, shafts, cams, drag links, king pins, bushings and bearings.
- Participates in maintaining, repairing, overhauling a variety of specialized equipment, accessories, and appurtenances peculiar to constructions a maintenance work.
- Participates in the work of a small crew engaged in operating machines, welding, cutting and brazing tools in automotive repair work.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques of the trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of both diesel and gas-powered internal combustion engines.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions of a variety of automotive and related equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the trade.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by technical courses relating to the trade.
- Considerable and varied experience as a skilled automotive mechanic.
