Meat Technical Inspectors are part of the Validation and Compliance skills family within the Operational Delivery Profession. This role involves delivering Meat Technical visits across England and Wales, supported by a small team based in Carlisle. These visits include beef and sheep carcass classification, pig carcass grading, deadweight price reporting, beef labelling checks, and Food Standards Agency audits. This is a customer facing role that requires visits to a variety of premises, including abattoirs, meat cutting and processing plants, and cold stores, to ensure compliance with relevant regulations. The position requires flexibility to meet changing demands, regular travel, overnight stays, and occasional out‑of‑hours working. Inspectors also support operational changes across RPA, engage with internal and external stakeholders, and ensure compliance with corporate policies relating to Health & Safety, Security, and Finance.
Responsibilities
- Delivering Meat Technical Scheme activities, including beef carcass classification, pig carcass grading, deadweight price reporting (beef, sheep, and pigs), beef labelling, sheep carcass classification, and Food Standards Agency audits.
- Engaging with internal and external stakeholders by providing advice, supporting pilots, and contributing to emerging developments.
- Carrying out customer facing visits to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements across various meat industry premises.
- Planning and delivering inspection schedules efficiently to meet key performance indicators.
- Identifying instances of non‑compliance, taking appropriate enforcement action, and developing and implementing improvement plans.
- Providing advice and guidance to businesses to help them meet required standards.
- Demonstrating flexibility to support changing business needs and contributing to wider RPA/Defra work when required.
