This is a crucially important role at the leading edge of aviation safety. You will be instrumental in determining the circumstances in which civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents take place worldwide, highlighting factors which influenced the outcome and indicating areas where change would lead to further improvements in safety.
Working as part of an investigation team, Inspectors of Air Accidents (Recorded Data) manage the investigation of all aspects of an aircraft accident or serious incident where recorded data, from both on‑board (e.g. flight recorders) and off‑board sources (e.g. radar data/radio telephony recordings) are involved. The recovery and replay of the recorded data, analysis of this data to assess aircraft performance, and the drafting of Safety Recommendations and reports are critical components of the role. The role involves extensive liaison with colleagues and technical personnel from aircraft manufacturers, operators, maintainers and regulators. You will be expected to attend Coroners’ court and give evidence.
Responsibilities
- Deploying at short notice to civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents within the UK or worldwide.
- Conducting detailed technical investigations in the UK and overseas in the UK’s Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.
- Supporting foreign safety investigation authorities in their work.
- Producing reports into the recorded data aspects of an event and promoting action to improve safety.
- Keeping families of victims of fatal accidents informed of the progress of an investigation and briefing them on the findings and conclusions.
- Giving technical evidence at coroners’ inquests to explain the findings of a report.
- Identifying safety issues and actively monitoring safety actions or making safety recommendations to address them.
- Writing software tools, console and GUI based to support the development activities of the recorded data group.
