Immigration Enforcement is responsible for enforcing the government’s immigration laws, tackling illegal migration, removing foreign national offenders and immigration offenders from the UK. It also aims to disrupt the organised criminal groups that exploit the vulnerable for their personal gain.
Within IE, the Foreign National Offenders Returns Command's (FNORC) purpose is to protect the public by removing foreign national offenders (FNOs). We seek to swiftly remove convicted foreign offenders from the UK, whilst ensuring that we offer protection and the safe management of vulnerable individuals. This is an exciting, dynamic, and fast-paced environment with new challenges being faced daily.
The Investigations Officer role is a challenging and rewarding post within the FNORC Investigations Team. The team supports the investigation of identity and nationality in complex cases where the primary barrier to removal is obtaining an emergency travel document. The role focuses on collaborative working with a range of internal and external partners, including the Police, National Crime Agency, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), to gather and assess information in line with established procedures.
The primary purpose of the role is to support case working teams by assisting in the establishment of identity and nationality for difficult-to-remove foreign national offenders. This includes attending casework surgeries to provide advice and practical support to colleagues on identifying and obtaining relevant supporting evidence.
You will conduct investigative interviews with foreign national offenders, both detained and non-detained, and on occasion within the community. Interviews may take place at various locations across the UK.
The role also requires proactive engagement with colleagues and stakeholders to support the work of the Investigations Team, including contributing to meetings, presentations and training activities, using agreed materials and with appropriate support from senior colleagues.
Key Responsibilities- Use all available investigative tools to establish the nationality and identity of non-compliant foreign national offenders.
- Arrange and conduct casework surgeries and advice sessions, monitoring cases that are referred to the Investigations team.
- Ensure that all Interpol and HMRC checks are submitted accurately and promptly.
- Attend and conduct investigative interviews with FNOs, their associates and family members in both detained and non-detained environments.
- Proactively assist in the development of stakeholder relationships.
- Produce evidential reports and packages to support both the applications for emergency travel documents and or consideration of continual deportation actions.

Working Pattern
Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis. Successful candidates will need to be able to attend for all shifts including early starts, late night finishes, and overnight shifts. These shifts may be outside of public transport operating hours. Hybrid working for this role will be a minimum of 70% in the office with approximately 30% home working, subject to business needs.
Training
You will receive full training and support to do the job. Training takes place initially in the classroom and then continues on the job with a mentor who supports you until you are fully confident in the role. Even then you are never alone; you work as part of a team where there is always someone around for advice and support.
