The Home Office works to build a safe, fair and prosperous UK. We achieve this through our work on counter-terrorism, policing, crime, drugs policy, immigration and passports. The Chief Operating Officer Group works closely with the Home Office’s policy and operational commands to enable us together to deliver the department’s priorities.
We’re looking to fill two roles within HOPS Environmental Sustainability Team:
- Role 1: Sustainability Officer (Climate Change, Net Zero and Water) - This role will play a key part in identifying and developing policies and action plans to deliver targets set out in the Greening Government Commitments (GGC) and the Home Office’s Climate Change Adaptation, Net Zero and Water Strategies. Responsibilities include:
- Reducing carbon emissions and managing water consumption.
- Working closely with the Sustainability Strategy and Policy Lead and stakeholders to implement actions supporting the Climate Change Action Plan, Net Zero target, and Water Management Plan.
- Monitoring and reporting progress against internal and external targets.
- Embedding regulatory requirements and best practices into standards for Climate Change and Net Zero policy.
- Providing expertise and advice on climate change, net zero, and water matters.
- Role 2: Sustainability Officer (Circular Economy and Ecology) - This role will focus on identifying and developing policies and action plans for the department’s waste, circular economy, and ecology strategies. Responsibilities include:
- Implementing actions to support the Circular Economy strategy and related waste management activities.
- Monitoring and reporting progress against internal and external targets.
- Embedding regulatory requirements and best practices into waste management processes.
- Providing expertise and advice on circular economy and waste management matters.
- Ecology - Responsibilities include:
- Developing a biodiversity baseline for key land holdings and managing nature recovery initiatives.
- Providing technical advice and support to project delivery teams for voluntary nature recovery initiatives and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG+10) requirements.
- Overseeing the management of Home Office’s land holdings and improving natural capital assets.
Broader Responsibilities (applies to both roles):
- Driving environmental improvement and supporting the government’s sustainability agenda.
- Building constructive working relationships with stakeholders and third-party contractors.
- Maintaining a culture of responsiveness, responsibility, continuous improvement, and mutual support.
You will be expected to keep abreast of current and emerging innovations in sustainability and factor this into future interventions. You will work flexibly across different areas of sustainability and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management.
Working pattern: These roles are only available on a full-time basis, but compressed hours are available.
Training: You will receive full training and support to perform your preferred role.
