We are the Trustee Guidance team. We write the Commission’s guidance for charity trustees, giving them the information they need to perform that role. The vast majority of trustees are unpaid volunteers, so it is important we support them by providing the information they need.

We are looking for a Trustee Guidance Manager, who will lead on projects to write guidance, so strong writing skills is essential. Moreover, we are looking for someone who can take complex information and explain that in plain English.

The successful candidate will have strong research, analytical and collaboration skills, to understand a topic and its implications, and work with people across the Commission to create the guidance. The role will give the post-holder exposure across the Commission and with senior colleagues. We sometimes deliver presentations based on guidance internally or to trustees.

Our projects can be long, and our drafting is rigorously tested internally and externally. The successful candidate does not have to be a charity law expert, but they will need to be curious, have resilience, an eye for detail and good organisational skills.

What are the main things you will be doing?

Write guidance, which is based on the law and Commission expectations, but using plain English so that trustees find it easy to understand and easy to access online.

Thoroughly research a topic before and during drafting. In addition, consider impacts and implications, and what the Commission’s policy position should be on a particular issue.

Make sound decisions (or where appropriate recommendations) on what to include and exclude, particularly whether feedback and editorial suggestions (including from senior colleagues) have merit.

Test drafts with colleagues internally, and with charities and sector bodies.

Work effectively with relevant colleagues to launch and promote the guidance with appropriate external messaging, and to track and measure the awareness, engagement, and impact of guidance.
